When reading a word problem you should:

Make a plan in your head or on paper for how t o solve the problem .

Decide whet her you are going t o need t o add, subt ract , m ult iply, or divide...or if you will need t o use a com binat ion of t hese operat ions.

Decide t he order of t he st eps you need t o t ake in order t o solv e the problem .

t he cashier $10.00. How m uch change did he get back?

First , decide what st eps we need t o t ake in order t o solve t he problem .

Step 1 :

Decide what t he quest ion is asking: I t is asking how m uch change Frank is going t o receive back from the $10.00 he gave t he cashier.

Step 2 :

Next , find out how m uch Frank is going t o spend when buying t he book and t he candy bar t oget her. So t hat m eans you m ust ADD the cost s of t he book and t he candy bar.
