Multiplying Fractions

Materials Needed: Poster paper, markers

Engage

(15 minutes)

Participants work in pairs to draw a picture or use manipulatives to represent each of the questions being asked below. Plan to share results with the whole group.

1. There are 15 teachers at a professional development. [pic]of those teachers have brown eyes. How many of the teachers have brown eyes? [pic]of 15

2. There are fifteen pizzas. [pic]of each pizza has mushrooms. How many pizzas have mushrooms? [pic]added 15 times

3. A flower garden is to be seeded that is 15 meters by [pic]of a meter. How much area is to be seeded? [pic](Area)

Explore

(15 minutes)

Have participants pair-share their results then discuss the similarities and differences in the 3 problems.

In all of the above problems, we were multiplying a fraction by a whole number. Let’s explore problems with 2 fractions.

Explore (cont) and Explain

(30 minutes)

Example 1: Zoey has [pic]of a pizza left. She decides to give [pic]of her pizza to her friend Zack. How much of the whole pizza does Zack get?

Q: Could we use any of the pictures from above to represent this problem? If so, which one(s)?

Q: Is there a different way from above that we could represent this problem?

Go over this problem with the whole group of participants

Example 2: Now it’s dessert time and everyone is full from pizza so only [pic]of a cake is eaten, which means that [pic]of the cake remains. Zoey is told that if she can figure out how much [pic]of the remaining cake is, that she gets to take it home. How much of the whole cake does Zoey get if she’s correct?

Have participants draw a picture or use manipulatives to represent the above question then discuss as a whole group, asking for a few volunteers to share their results.

Extend (30 minutes)

Now have participants work in groups of 3-4 to come up with a word problem that uses a given problem, which is handed out to the groups:

Have groups present their problems on poster paper, having them include how they would explain the problem to their students (grade-level appropriate).
