Using Sound in PowerPoint

Sound effects are available to accompany animated text, images, or slide transitions in PowerPoint. Unfortunately, almost all of the built-in sounds in PowerPoint are inappropriate. If you wish to use sound with your show, plan to use sounds or music from a CD, or royalty free sound or music clips downloaded from the Internet. Another sound source to consider; if you have a microphone you can record your own sounds.

Step-by-step directions for inserting sound into PowerPoint

This explanation assumes that you already have text and images on your slides,

and that you will be using music from a CD.

Step 1 – Select the slide where you want the music to start.

Step 2 – From the Insert menu slide down to Movies and Sounds, and then slide over to Play CD Audio Track and click one time.

Step 3 – A pop-up dialog box asks you to select the track you will be using and whether you want the sound to loop. Unless the track is very short, don’t use looping.

Step 4 – Click OK.

Step 5 – PowerPoint opens another dialog box asking you to decide if the sound should play automatically. If you click Yes, as soon as your slide opens the sound track should start. You decide which you want. If you select No, you must click on the sound icon to start the sound.

Step 6 – Right-click on the sound icon and select Custom Animation.

Step 7 – A sound animation icon will be at the top of a white block. Click on the down arrow at the right of the icon and select Effect Options.

Step 8 – The Play Sound dialog box gives you a great deal of control over the sound. You can select a volume, starting time, or how many slides you want the sound to play through. If your slide show is ten slides long, and you want the sound to stop before the last slide, then you would click Stop Playing after 9 slides.

Step 9 – You may want the sound icon to be invisible on your PowerPoint slide. To do that, right-click the sound icon, and then select Format Picture. On the Picture tab slide the brightness control all the way to the right to 100%. The sound icon is invisible, but it is still active.
