AO_HEO BOOK LIST BY TITLE

AMBLESIDE ONLINE BOOK LIST BY TITLE

Year 0.5

This is not an authoritative list compiled by the Ambleside Online advisory, but rather a list put together by various members of the Ambleside Year 0 Yahoo group. It is meant for children of 5+ years who are ready to move beyond the Year 0 list or who live where Kindergarten is required. However, reading should not be the primary activity for a child of this age. The child should still be outside interacting with nature a number of hours each day as well as working on habits, listening to music (classical, hymns, and folksongs), and viewing prints of great art. Where possible, storytelling should take precedence over reading directly from a book.

|Charlotte Mason’s preference was to wait until age 6 for formal | | |0.5 |

|reading lessons. Until then the child could work (play) at learning | | | |

|his letters and some simple word building. However, if you think your| | | |

|child is REALLY ready, here are some suggestions. The only program | | | |

|truly in line with CM is the Yahoo group CM Reading Lessons. While | | | |

|this is not complete, it will be added to and does offer enough | | | |

|information for you to make up your own lessons once you have used | | | |

|some of the material in the files. | | | |

|CM Reading Lessons | |Phonics |0.5 |

| | | | |

|This Yahoo groups contains enough to begin simple CM reading lessons | | | |

|with word building of short and long vowels, and some selections for | | | |

|further reading skills. | | | |

|Alpha-Phonics |Blumenfeld, Samuel L. |Phonics |0.5 |

| | | |

|941995003/ref=sr_oe_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1212988696&sr=1-1 | | | |

|If using a formal phonics program, this is my first choice. It | | | |

|requires little teacher preparation and is done orally. | | | |

|Phonics Pathways |Hiskes, Dolores |Phonics |0.5 |

| | | |

|as%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=phonics+pathways&x=0&y=0 | | | |

|While this is an excellent program please be aware that it is not in | | | |

|line with the way Charlotte Mason advocated teaching reading. Instead| | | |

|of using word building (c-at), it uses (ca-t). | | | |

|Reading Made Easy |Bendt, Valerie |Phonics |0.5 |

| | | | |

|A very thorough program, but also very teacher intensive. | | | |

|The Ordinary Parent’s Guide to Teaching Reading |Wise, Jessie and Buffington, Sara |Phonics |0.5 |
