COURSE DESCRIPTION

PUBH 361 Health Organization Communication (3 credits) This course explores the communication processes, issues and concepts that comprise the organization of health care, focusing on the interactions that influence the lives of patients, health professionals and other members of health institutions, by examining how health institutions function communicatively to ultimately benefit health care delivery.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The course: - Explores the processes and function of communication in health care delivery - Identifies the issues and concepts related to the organization of health care - Explores interactions that influence the lives of patients - Examines how communication benefits health care delivery.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: - Discuss health workers' and leaders' impact communication within health care institutions - Identify issues and concepts affecting communication within health care institutions - Discuss health workers and leaders impact communication within health care institutions - Explain how technology affects communication within health care institutions - Describe how communication impacts the quality of health care delivery

The instructor will not attempt to cover all of the assigned readings; however, students will be responsible for all material assigned. Students are encouraged to ask questions and expected to participate in class discussions. To fully participate in class discussions and to be able to express personal opinions, you should read the designated chapter in the text or required reading in preparation for the next class. Active participation and in class discussion is expected of each student.

A. Attendance Regular class attendance will be expected throughout the semester. It is the responsibility of each student to scan their own student identification card to confirm attendance.

It is important to be on time for class and present for information on upcoming assignments and exams. If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to obtain the notes from a classmate.

If at any point a student misses over 25% of class meetings (more than 10 classes, excused or unexcused), he/she will

receive an F as their final grade. For more information regarding the CCU attendance policy, refer to the current CCU Academic Catalog.

B. Academic Integrity & Plagiarism Statement Violations of the Student Code of Conduct will not be tolerated. Any such violations will be dealt with in strict accordance to Coastal Carolina University guidelines.

D. Moodle Important class information, announcements, chapter notes, exams and homework may be posted on Blackboard. To ensure success in this course, you MUST have a reliable Internet source to check Moodle.

E. In-Class Assignments Such work may be randomly assigned throughout the semester to enhance understanding of course content. These assignments may include activities such as personal assessments, worksheets and group work. In- Class assignments cannot be made up; therefore, it is important that you attend all classes.

F. Assignments ? ALL assignments must be professional in appearance, typed, and stapled unless otherwise directed by the instructor. ? Assignments will be accepted before the scheduled due dates. However, no late assignments will be accepted.

G. Test Tests will consist of information from lecture notes, class discussion, activities, and assigned supplemental readings.

NOTE: Make-up test will be authorized only with official documentation provided by the student according to the Coastal Carolina University Academic Regulations found in the CCU catalog. Pending approval of the documentation by the instructor, make-up tests will be scheduled on a date determined by the instructor.
