He asked them, ‘Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?’ 7?“‘Because no one has hired us,’ they answered.“ He said to them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard.’ 8?“When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.’ 9?“The workers who were hired about five in the afternoon came and each received a denarius. 10?So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius. 11?When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner. 12?‘These who were hired last worked only one hour,’ they said, ‘and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.’ 13?“But he answered one of them, ‘I am not being unfair to you, friend. Didn’t you agree to work for a denarius? 14?Take your pay and go. I want to give the one who was hired last the same as I gave you. 5?Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?’16?“So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”00Gospel Reading : Matthew 20 : vv 1-16The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard20?“For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. 2?He agreed to pay them a denarius[a] for the day and sent them into his vineyard. 3?“About nine in the morning he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing. 4?He told them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.’ 5?So they went. “He went out again about noon and about three in the afternoon and did the same thing. 6?About five in the afternoon he went out and found still others standing around. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! 23?I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; 24?but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. 5?Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, 26?so that through my being with you again your boasting in Christ Jesus will abound on account of me.Life Worthy of the Gospel27?Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit,[a] striving together as one for the faith of the gospel 28?without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved—and that by God. 29?For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him, 30?since you are going through the same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have.00The Epistle : Philippians 1 vv 21-3021?For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. 22?If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. We are too often selfish, wanting what we want no matter what the cost to others.Almighty God, forgive us, reassure us and cradle us within your forgiveness. Amen Prayers of intercessionPlease say the response in bold type God, be with them.Eternal, ever-living, ever-present God, in the struggles and joys of this day, we pray:for those who are overburdened, weighed down, demoralized, fearful or desolate because of what life has thrown at them God, be with themFor those engulfed in pain and anguish, facing illness and death God, be with themFor those troubled in mind and spirit, who find no peace or calm God, be with themFor those alone and lonely, without friend or comfort God, be with themFor those frightened and bewildered, who see no direction or purpose in their lives God, be with them…Eternal, ever-living God, bless them all in this and every hour, in this and every step of life’s journey. AmenOur Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever.
