THE DETECTIVES: THE ORIGIN OF INSPECTOR WINSLOW

(Opening Scene: The office)

PROPS: computer, table

ARCHIE: Hey, Inspector, I've got a question for you. I was wondering, how did you first become a detective? I mean, was it something you always wanted to do, or did your mom and dad make you become a detective?

WINSLOW: Actually, I didn't always want to become a detective, but I knew I had a special gift. Even when I was a young boy, I knew I had the power to discover clues and solve problems.

When I was a boy, one time I met this kid named Sam.

(WINSLOW and ARCHIE EXIT)

(Scene Two: At a park, YOUNG WINSLOW and SAM)

PROPS: table, dirty sock, baseball card

SAM: Hey, Winslow, my name's Sam. I don't live around here; I'm just visiting Tony. Tony says you've got special powers or something.

YOUNG WINSLOW: I just know how to look for clues.

SAM: What can you tell about me?

YOUNG WINSLOW: I know you have a bicycle that you ride. You also have a dog and a baseball card collection. One of your chores is cutting the grass. Oh yeah, also, you like pizza.

SAM: Everything you said is true! How did you know all that? Not even Tommy knows all that about me!

YOUNG WINSLOW: It's easy when you know how to look for clues.

SAM: Well what clue told you that I ride a bicycle?

YOUNG WINSLOW: You have a black grease mark on your right sock. That's the kind of mark a bicycle chain makes when you're pedaling too close to the chain and your sock rubs against it.

SAM: Well how did you know about my dog?

YOUNG WINSLOW: I can see dog hairs on your pants.

SAM: Oh, yeah. But how did you know about my baseball card collection?

YOUNG WINSLOW: I can see a baseball card sticking out of your pocket.

SAM: Oh. Well how did you know I have to cut the grass for my dad?

YOUNG WINSLOW: Easy. There's little pieces of cut grass sticking to your sneakers.

SAM: And how do you know I like pizza?

YOUNG WINSLOW: That's the easiest one of all. Everybody likes pizza!

(YOUNG WINSLOW EXITS, with SAM right behind him, shaking his head in wonder)

(Scene Three: The office, with ARCHIE and WINSLOW)

PROPS: computer, table

ARCHIE: That is so amazing. But why didn't you want to become a detective after you found out that you had such an amazing gift?

WINSLOW: I was selfish. I didn't really want to help anyone; I just wanted to show off. It wasn't until I got saved that I realized that the gift I had was from God. And God wanted me to use my gift to help other people. I remember one time all the kids in our neighborhood decided to meet together to trade baseball cards.

(ARCHIE and WINSLOW EXIT)

(Scene Four: At the park, TONY, JENNY, SCOTT, HAZEL are trading cards at a table)

PROPS: table, baseball cards

TONY: Hey Scott! Whatcha got?

SCOTT: I got Reggie Jackson! I just got it yesterday, too.

TONY: Wow, Reggie Jackson! I'll trade you Eddie Milner, Bob Forsch, and Jim Winn.

(JERRY carefully picks up Scott's Reggie Jackson card and moves over next to Tony. He then picks up Tony's card of George Brett. Then he crosses the table and stands next to Hazel.)

SCOTT: No way, dude! Those guys stink!

HAZEL: I'll trade for your Reggie Jackson!

TONY: Do you have any good ones?

JENNY: How about my Nolan Ryan? (She picks it up and shows it to him, but then replaces it on her pile. Just as soon as she replaces the card, however, JERRY steals it.)

TONY: Whoa! Good enough for me! It's a deal.

HAZEL: Wait a minute . . . I know that card was here a minute ago. How could I have just lost it?

SCOTT: Hey! I'm missing my Reggie Jackson card!

TONY: And I don't have my card of George Brett any more! Somebody around here is a thief.

SCOTT: But we don't know who.

HAZEL: Maybe we should look for clues.

YOUNG WINSLOW: Did somebody say, "Clues?"

(YOUNG WINSLOW lays his pile of baseball cards down on the table. Just as soon as he does, JERRY carefully moves the whole pile to the edge of the table and fingers the bottom card. Then he quickly slides the pile back where WINSLOW had originally placed it.)

TOMMY: Winslow! You've got to help us out! Somebody has been stealing our baseball cards and we don't know who.

YOUNG WINSLOW: Well, I'm sorry to hear that, but it's not my problem. I just came here to trade baseball cards. Wait a minute . . . where's the card that was on the bottom of this stack? Jerry, can you tell me anything?

JERRY: I don't know anything about your Dave Winfield card.

YOUNG WINSLOW: But Jerry, I never told you which card I was missing. How did you know it was my Dave Winfield card?

JERRY: Uh, just a lucky guess?

SCOTT: Let's see your cards, Jerry! Take them out of your pocket right now!

JERRY: (weakly) Okay. (he reluctantly puts them on the table for all to see)

YOUNG WINSLOW: Ah-ha! There's my Dave Winfield card!

TONY: And my George Brett!

SCOTT: My Reggie Jackson.

HAZEL: And my Nolan Ryan card.

TONY: (putting an arm around YOUNG WINSLOW'S shoulder) It sure is nice to have a professional detective around sometimes!

(ALL EXIT)

(Scene Five: The office, with WINSLOW and ARCHIE)

PROPS: computer, table

ARCHIE: You must have been a big hero that day.

WINSLOW: Yeah, I guess I was. But do you know what I remember most of all about that day?

ARCHIE: What?

WINSLOW: I remember I went home and told my father about what happened. And do you know what he told me? He said that God gave me the ability to find clues for a reason. He said that God wanted me to use my gift to help people solve their problems and show them the way to Jesus. That night, my dad led me in a sinner's prayer. I got saved and became a detective for Jesus.

ARCHIE: So that's how it all began. But there's just one last thing I don't understand. How come you're so good at finding clues, but you can't even find two matching socks to wear?

WINSLOW: What do you mean "they don't match?" This black sock goes with my black shoes and this tan sock goes with my tan pants.

ARCHIE: (giggling) Oh, I see.
