Case-1) If you mapped your UNIXS account/drive but when ...

Case-1) Question? I mapped my AFS client but when I open the folder (i.e. My Computer) I do not see the public and private folders. What did I do wrong?

Answer ( The problem could be related to the following:

1. The path that you mapped (make sure it is your actual UNIXS path, which is similar to this path: /afs/pitt.edu/home/first-initial-a/second-initial-b/abcst10).

In the afs dialog box, use a backslash (i.e. \afs\pitt.edu\.....) not forward slash as above.

2. Authenticate by obtaining a new token (make sure the cell is: pitt.edu   and use your own Pitt password).

3. Open “My Computer” and double-click the UNIXS mapped drive name, you should see the contents of your UNIXS account (including public and private folders).

Case-2) Question? I was attempting to map AFS Client to my personal labtop and I keep

receiving an error message: Error Mapping Network Drive-AFS was unable to

map the network drive to the specified path in AFS. Check to make sure the

drive letter is not currently in use. Error: 0xFFFFFFFF.

Answer ( Once you install AFS Client, follow exactly the instructions in the note posted in the course site:

( The error in creating the drive name is likely related to the name already exists! Hence use a unique drive name (i.e. avoid using A, C, D, E, M).

Case-3) Question? I went to complete the task at the lab located in the Lawrence building, however they did not have the applications available.  I was curious if you knew where there was a lab that did have the available resources, or if the Sennot building was open to the public for regular use.

Answer ( You can capture the window showing the problem and that itself should be a proof that you attempted the work.

Another option would be to download the AFS-Client software from the class site and install it on your PC then you should be all set.

Given you have your own PC/Laptop, and then you won’t need the computer lab on campus nor the class computer room. The class computer room operates according to scheduled classes. Usually it is available and free after hours (i.e. evenings).

In this case, just capture the window showing the problem and that itself should be a proof that you attempted the work.

This could be related to the network not being active (or no internet service). Another case would be no authentication (no token obtained), and lastly could be related to the path used in the mapping.

If all of the above is correct, then capturing the screen showing the error should grant you the credit for the question since it shows you downloaded the program and attempted to use it.
