Getting to Know God: Who God Is

Week 3: God Is Holy

This includes:

Leader Preparation

Lesson Guide

LEADER PREPARATION

BIBLE BASIS

From beginning to end, the Bible describes God’s holiness. Deuteronomy records the Song of Moses—a song of praise to God. Moses wrote these words just before he died and the Israelites entered the Promised Land. Oh that we could know God as Moses did! Here, Moses describes God’s holiness. To be holy is to be faithful, perfect, just, good, and pure. When we begin to understand God’s holiness, we, like Moses, can’t help but praise him.

DISCOVERY POINT

God is holy.

BIBLE FOCUS

Deuteronomy 32:1-4

KEY VERSE

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, the Almighty—the one who always was, who is, and who is still to come” (Revelation 4:8).

TEACHING PREP

The short overview below is designed to help you prepare for your lesson.

Supplies You’ll Need: Getting to Know God: Who God Is (Year 2/Quarter 5) CD, LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD, CD player, TV/DVD player, “Pop Quiz!” handouts, scissors, pencils, Bibles, rocks, markers, and sticky notes

Before This Lesson

• Print the “Pop Quiz!” handout, and cut the handout page in half. You’ll need one section for each child. Set quizzes and a container of pencils near the door where kids will enter.

• Use a sticky note to mark Deuteronomy 32 in each Bible.

• Assemble Bible Exploration Kits (one per four kids): one 3-inch or larger rock per child, markers, Bible with page marked. (If rocks are not readily available, substitute newsprint and tape. Then kids can wad up the paper and use the tape to create their own rocks.)

• Review Deuteronomy 32:1-4.

• Cue "Into the Bible" (Track 1) on Getting to Know God: Who God Is (Year 2/Quarter 5) CD or (Quarter 5/Track 1) on the LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD.

• Huddle briefly with your volunteers beforehand. Answer any questions they have. Encourage them and pray.

PARENT EMAIL

We’ve provided you with a “Family Devotion” handout to send the Bible learning and faith discovery home. When kids and parents have faith discussions regularly, kids’ faith multiplies.

So we’ve given you two options:

• Print the “Family Devotion” handout and make enough copies for each child to take one home.

• Email the “Family Devotion” to families before or after the actual lesson.

Or why not do both? That way you’ll double the opportunities for parents to actually get the handout.

2. LESSON GUIDE

WELCOME!

Supplies: Getting to Know God: Who God Is (Year 2/Quarter 5) CD, LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD, CD player, TV/DVD player, “Pop Quiz!” handouts, pencils

1. Play “Into the Bible” (Track 1) from the Getting to Know God: Who God Is (Year 2/Quarter 5) CD or (Quarter 5/Track 1) from the LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD as kids arrive.

• “Into the Bible”

Makes me wanna jump!

Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump!

Makes me wanna sing! Hallelujah!

It’s the greatest book.

Come and take a look.

Makes me wanna shout!

Shout! Shout! Shout! Shout!

So that everyone will see

I’m getting into the Bible

And the Bible...is getting into me!

We’re discovering a brand-new world

As we dig a little deeper (deeper),

Finding out about who God is.

Open it up and see it (see it)!

There’s nothin’ like

God’s Word, and I get

So excited.

It makes me wanna,

Makes me,

Makes me wanna jump!

Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump!

Makes me wanna sing! Hallelujah!

It’s the greatest book.

Come and take a look.

Makes me wanna shout!

Shout! Shout! Shout! Shout!

So that everyone will see

I’m getting into the Bible

And the Bible...is getting into me!

2. Hand kids each a “Pop Quiz!” handout and a pencil as they arrive. (If you have young children who may not be able to read the questions, pair them with older kids and tell them it’s OK to work together.)

SAY: Welcome! I have a special surprise for you! Here’s a pop quiz! Answer all of the questions correctly. We’ll be grading them in a few minutes. Please don’t let anyone cheat by looking at your answers! Give kids several minutes to fill in their pop quiz. Then let them swap quizzes with a partner and take turns grading the quizzes.

3. When the kids have finished grading each other’s quizzes,

ASK:

• What were thinking before, during and after the pop quiz?

• Explain what it’s like when you get that same score on a test at school.

• Why is it or isn’t it possible to always get the perfect score?

SAY: If you got a perfect score on your quiz, you didn’t make any mistakes. In school, that would be called 100 percent good. Today, we’re going to learn about how God is 100 percent good all the time! The Bible says that God is holy. That’s another way of saying that God is 100 percent good all the time. Help me count down from 100—no wait—let’s just count down from 10 in perfect unison to get started!

4. Play the “Python Countdown” (Quarter 5/Countdown Track 2) on the LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD, and have kids call out the numbers in perfect unison.

LET’S EXPLORE!

Supplies: assembled Bible Exploration Kits, LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD, TV/DVD player

1. Have the kids form Bible Crews, and give each crew a Bible Exploration Kit.

2. Ask crews to get out their Bibles and turn to Deuteronomy 32:1-4. Have them read the Scripture and find one word or phrase to describe God for each person in the group. After about two minutes, ask kids to stand up and say their words or phrases all at the same time.

SAY: I heard a lot of cool words that describe God. Did you know there’s one word that sums up everything in these four verses? The word the Bible uses to mean all of these things is holy. Holy means “perfect,” “fair,” “does no wrong,” and “right” all in one! It also means 100 percent good. God is holy.

ASK:

• Why do you or don’t you agree with Moses?

• What are some other words you might use to describe “holy”?

3. SAY: Go back to your crews and read Deuteronomy 32:1-4 again to see what object God is like. When you figure it out, use all of your crew members to form that object.

4. When all the Bible Crews look like rocks, have crews discuss why God is compared to a rock. After a few minutes,

ASK:

• Why do you think Moses compared God to a rock in this Scripture?

• In what ways is God like a rock in your life?

SAY: God is a rock in our lives because God never changes and God is holy. God’s goodness, fairness, and rightness will not change. Let’s make a reminder that God can be our rock because God is holy.

5. Have Bible Crews get the supplies from their Bible Exploration Kits. Let them use the markers to write “God is my” on their rocks. Give them several minutes to complete their writing.

Then SAY: Just as the word holy has several meanings, so does the word rock. Rock can mean a stone, or it can mean a kind of music. In your Bible Crews, create a rock song that tells how God is holy. Tell how God is just, right, and fair all the time. You can even tell how God is the rock of your life. You’ll have five minutes from the end of this countdown to create your song. Help me count down with your best rock ’n’ roll voice.

Play the “Rocket Countdown” (Quarter 5/Countdown Track 1) the LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD, and then SAY: Go!

LET’S PRAISE!

Supplies: Getting to Know God: Who God Is (Year 2/Quarter 5) CD or LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD, CD player or TV/DVD player

1. Have Bible Crews sing their rock ‘n’ roll tunes to open the praise time. SAY: Let’s keep on rock’n’ with our praise songs. Let’s add rock ’n’ roll movements as we praise God because God is holy!

2. Set up the Getting to Know God: Who God Is (Year 2/Quarter 5) CD or the LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD. PLAY:

• “Nothing Is Impossible” (Luke 1:37) (CD Track 3) (DVD Quarter 5/Track 3)

Sometimes when you don’t know what to do,

It feels like you don’t even have a clue.

That is when you’ve got to turn to God,

Because you know that he can do anything!

Nothing is impossible with God!

Nothing is impossible with God! Yeah!

LET’S PRAY!

Supplies: rocks from Let’s Explore!, Getting to Know God: Who God Is (Year 2/Quarter 5) CD, CD player

SAY: While I play some quiet music, take the rock you made and talk with God about what you’ve learned today. Talk to God about being strong like a rock and never changing. Talk with God about his holiness.

Play the instrumental version of “The One and Only Lord” (Mark 12:29) (Track 10) from the Getting to Know God: Who God Is (Year 2/Quarter 5) CD while kids pray.

HIGH FIVES

Supplies: none

Have kids give each other rock’n’ high fives as they leave. Be sure to remind them to take their rocks home as a reminder that God is holy—their holy rock.

FOR-EXTRA-TIME ACTIVITIES

Holy Relay

Supplies: newsprint, tape, markers

Have kids gather in their Bible Crews on one end of the room. Tape one piece of newsprint for each crew to the far wall, and give each crew a marker. Have a relay where crew members take turns running to their newsprint and adding a word that describes God’s holiness. They can use their Bibles to look at today’s Scripture. Let crews compare their papers after several minutes.

Hop My Rock

Supplies: rocks from lesson activities

Have Bible Crews line up on one end of the room with their rocks in a line pointing to the opposite end of the room 6 inches apart. Have crews race to the opposite end of the room by taking turns hopping their rocks one at a time—checkers style. Every time a kid takes a turn, he or she needs to name one new word that describes God’s holiness. Encourage kids to use their Bibles to find the words they need.

Hiding It in Your Heart

Supplies: none

Have groups of four read the Key Verse, Revelation 4:8. Have kids think of a creative way to form the word “holy” as a crew, with each person becoming one of the letters. Allow each group to show how they made “holy” while the other crews repeat the verse.

Create a Bible Dictionary

Supplies: paper, markers, dictionary, CD player, Getting to Know God: Who God Is (Year 2/Quarter 5) CD

Ask kids to create one or more pages, each with a new word, for a Bible dictionary. Have kids suggest words from today’s lesson—holy and faithful are two suggestions. Have them write each word on a sheet of paper in fun letters, add a definition, list Scripture references, and make illustrations. Play “The Books of the Bible Song” (Track 8), from the Getting to Know God: Who God Is (Year 2/Quarter 5) CD while kids work. Add each page to a three-ring binder, and watch the dictionary grow!
