STRUCTURED DISCOVERY INSTRUCTION (INDIRECT INSTRUCTION)

LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE

Name:

|Initial Planning |

|Grade Level/Subject: 4th Grade Science Topic: Nutrition |

|NCSCOS Standard and Objective |4.NPA.1 |

| |Apply tools (My Plate, Food Facts Label) to plan healthy nutrition and fitness. |

| |4.NPA.1.1 |

| |Plan meals using My Plate |

| | |

|Behavioral Objective |Students will apply their knowledge of My Plate, by writing a letter to a restaurant whose menu they have|

| |deemed unhealthy, to tell them why their food was unhealthy and how they can offer healthier options. |

|Objective Rationale |Students need to know how to use My Plate to engage in healthy eating habits. Having the students write |

| |letters combines science and writing and I want to combine subjects whenever possible. Also if a student |

| |can analyze a menu and tell how they can make changes they are using higher level thinking skills, which |

| |shows their understanding of the concept. |

|Prerequisite Knowledge and Skills |The day before this lesson will take place students will learn what My Plate is and make the paper plate |

| |diagram. |

| |Students must also be familiar with making observations. |

|Key Terms and Vocabulary |My Plate |

| |Worksheet with 6 different restaurant menus |

|Content and Instructional Strategies |

|Lesson Introduction |

|Engage |The lesson will begin with a class discussion. “What are some of your favorite places to eat?” The |

| |students will name off places they like to eat and what kind of food that restaurant serves. “Do you |

| |think the food they serve is healthy?” |

|Lesson Development |

|Explore |Students will be broken into their regular teams and they will receive a handout with 6 mini restaurant |

| |menus. They are to make observations about the six menus. How they are alike, and how they are different.|

| |They will be directed to have their My Plates out on their desks during this activity. |

| |While this is happening I will circulate around the room to make sure the groups are on task. |

|Explain |The groups will go back to their seats and the class will have a group discussion. I will ask the |

| |students to share their observations. I will be looking for similarities and differences. I will ask if |

| |anyone used his or her My Plate during this activity. If a student did I will have them share how they |

| |used it. If the students did not utilize the My Plate I will ask them then to look at the My Plate and |

| |look at the menus and tell me what they notice. I will take that opportunity to remind them that the My |

| |Plate is a diagram of what a healthy and balanced meal looks like. Based off the My Plate diagram the |

| |students will then determine if each of the six menus is deemed healthy or unhealthy. The menu is split |

| |down the middle half are healthy options while the other half are unhealthy options. The class will use |

| |one menu as an example. They will be prompted to say if they think it’s healthy or not. They will then be|

| |asked what they could change to make it a healthier meal. If they struggle with the question they will be|

| |directed to use their My Plate. |

|Elaborate |Students will write a letter to one of the unhealthy restaurants. They must tell the restaurant why their|

| |food is unhealthy and how they can change it. After they finish their letter they will have the |

| |opportunity to come to the authors chair and share with the class. |

|Plans for Individual Differences |Student 8- requires more time to complete assignments so he will be allowed to take his letter home to |

| |finish. |

| |For students that seem to be struggling I will have a writing conference with them to see what direction |

| |their letter is headed. I will ask them questions about the menu they chose, and refer them to the My |

| |Plate diagram to help them with their healthier suggestions. |

|Lesson Evaluation |

|Evaluate |Students will be evaluated based on their letters. Students must meet the these criteria: |

| |-They must correctly choose an unhealthy restaurant from the menu list to address the letter to. |

| |- They must tell why the restaurants food options are unhealthy. |

| |-They must give an example of how the restaurant can change their menu to offer healthier options. |
