Lancaster, Pennsylvania

Presider: Ed McGeehan

Invocation: Darrell Gerke

Menu: French toast and a unique quiche that someone in the chow line called “Door Stoppers”.

Guests: Cheryl Deaven, Lancaster Club

Bethany Woodcock

Happy Bucks:

Ed McGeeham: Signed up to ring the Salvation Army Bell with Ron Alarie, but Ron sent Lyn instead. Ed called it a self pity buck, but club members thought he made out well and that Ron owes Ed a buck.

Patrick Kirkham: Open House with Natural Alliance this Saturday. 10% off all technology. This is a great time to learn what Patrick’s business is all about. See details in the advertisement at the end.

Jim Eshleman: Glad he didn’t have to ring the bell for an hour with Alarie.

Jeff Glass: Son was student of the quarter in middle school.

Darrell Gerke: Go Army! The big game is this Saturday.

Announcements

Club Holiday Party Dec 18. Bring family! We need to know numbers, so email Tammy if you weren’t able to put your name on the sheet we circulated. We’ll have Hempfield singers, Father Christmas, candy canes for the kids – the whole deal. Email Tammy NOW. mailto:redrosehearing@

News of the Weird: president Ed read a news story about a Republican Girl who rammed her Democrat Boyfriend with her jeep, blaming him for the presidential election results. This occurred in Arizona, which was solidly red, and winner take all for electoral votes. (Editor’s note – this mode of reasoning not an uncommon Republican trait)

BTC EXPO – Some venue and scheduling options are being explored. Stay tuned, this will be resolved very soon.

Program: Bethany Woodcock, NIMBY

Bethany is the Winter Shelter Coordinator for the LCCC.

She also started Not in My Back Yard (NIMBY), a grassroots organization working to raise awareness about modern day slavery.

She shared some stats:

• 80% of all trafficked people are women

• 50% are children

• 15,000 – 18,000 are brought to the USA annually

• 100,000 American kids are enslaved each year

• The average age for an American kid recruited in to the sex trade is 13

• 27 Million People are enslaved worldwide today, more than at any other time in history.

The internet has taken this off the street corner. It’s easy to go to many web sites and see who is for sale in Lancaster PA.

Pennsylvania gets an “F” for efforts in stopping human trafficking.

Bethany steered us to CASE, which is Lancaster County’s Campaign Against the Sexual Exploitation of Children

Bethany talked about Fair Trade goods, and how purchasing those items is a real way to combat worldwide slavery. Foods such as Coffee, cocoa, and sardines, are often farmed and harvested by enslaved children.

NIMBY is for people who want to make a difference. What can we do?

• Buy Fairly Traded Goods

• Don’t be a customer for pornography

• Advocate for anti-human trafficking laws

• Call the Human Trafficking hotline if you see ANYTHING. 888-3737-888 (The number is written weird, but dials normally)
