Creation - Dramatic reading based on Genesis 1

In the beginning Elohim created the heavens and the earth.

Darkness covered the face of the deep, the Spirit the breath of Elohim hovered over the waters.

And Elohim spoke, “Let there be light”, and there was light. The light was good. Elohim gave light and darkness their names, they belonged to Him.

And then Elohim spoke, “Let there be a moving apart an expanse in the midst of the waters and let it separate water from water”. Elohim separated clouds above from the waters below. And Elohim gave the sky its name, it belonged to Elohim.

And then Elohim spoke, “Let the waters under the heavens and sky be collected together in one place, and let dryness appear”. And it happened. Elohim gave the land and the seas their names, they belonged to Elohim.

Then Elohim spoke again, “Let the ground, the land produce grass, plants that give seeds and trees that give fruit with their own kinds of seeds inside”. And the ground and the land did produce them.

And then Elohim spoke, “Let there be lights in the expanse of heavens to separate the day from the night”. And so it was

He created sun, moon and stars to give light, to the land, to rule over the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness.

And then Elohim spoke, "Let the waters teem with an abundance of living things, and let winged creatures fly above the land, across face of the expanse of the heavens."

And that’s how Elohim created them all. And He blessed them with fruitfulness.

And then Elohim spoke “Let the land produce each kind of living creature: livestock, and creeping thing and wild animals of the land, according to its kind”. And the land produced them, just as Elohim had said.

And then Elohim spoke, "Let us make mankind in our image, according to our likeness". And that’s how Elohim created mankind, in the image of Elohim he created them; male and female he created them. And He blessed them with fruitfulness and He gave them authority over all living things.

And so the heavens and the land and everything in them were finished, and Elohim saw that it was good. And then Elohim rested.

Introduction

In Old testament - a person's name was often linked to a person's character, but how could ONE name be adequate to express God's greatness? Even for someone like David - we say Shepherd, Warrior, King, Prophet, musician etc.

In the beginning, God ...........

The Hebrew word is ELOHIM. This is derived from EL meaning strong and mighty and contains the idea of creative power - of sovereignty, omnipotence from Genesis 1v1 - 2 - 4 used 35 times.

In the whole Bible - used 2570 times.

It is also linked to covenants with the patriarchs.

Over & over again it is written :- "I will be unto you God (Elohim) and you shall be unto me for a people"

And linked to the coming New Covenant expressed in JER 31 v 33 & 32 v 40.

ELOHIM is a plural form, but accompanied by adjectives in the singular i.e. Genesis 1 v 1 The verb create is singular yet there are singular and plural pronouns. (e.g. Let us make man in our image).

I am ELOHIM and there is no ELOHIM besides me. This is consistent with the doctrine of the Trinity.

Repeat of Elohim

JEHOVAH

Translated LORD ( in some older versions LORD in capitals. This was to distinguish it from ADONAI also translated as Lord.

This is the most frequently used name for God in the Old Testament - 6,823 times.

JEHOVAH

The first time it appears is Genesis 2 v 4 Lord God or Jehovah - Elohim. The name JEHOVAH relates to the self existent one. As JEHOVAH, He is revealing Himself to men (A bit like this personal pronoun) see Exodus 6 v 2 &3.

Whereas ELOHIM is the general name of God to do with creation & His works, JEHOVAH reveals His moral and spiritual nature.

JEHOVAH

Whereas ELOHIM is the general name of God to do with creation & His works, JEHOVAH reveals His moral and spiritual nature.

ELOHIM looks at His omnipotence

JEHOVAH reveals His love and Mercy.

Thus the name JEHOVAH links to His personality, and as JEHOVAH, He places man under moral obligation with a warning of punishment for disobedience. Lev 19 v 2

His holiness is magnified through Old Testament.

It is Jehovah who must judge sin, but Jehovah is love & it makes Him grieve over the sin and sorrow of His creatures. So God is always seeking to restore and redeem.

EL SHADDAI - God Almighty - All Sufficient one

This name first appears in connection with Abraham - Gen 17 v 1 & 2

The EL is the same as in Elohim and is translated "God" over 200 times in the Bible.

So what about the SHADDAI part? Its root seems to be derived from "breast" implying source of supply. Linked together it becomes "One mighty to nourish, satisfy and supply" Gen 49 v 24 - 25

El - Shaddai is a shedder forth of blessings - bountiful blessings. No wonder, Abraham needed a revelation of this, to believe what God was able to do when he was a 100 and Sarah 90! It was a staggering promise - but God as El Shaddai is super - abundantly able !!!

By the name El Shaddai, God changes Abram (exalted father) to Abraham (Father of multitudes)

Gen 17 v 6. Gen 28 v 3. Gen 35 v 11.

The El - Shaddai of Old Testament is the one who deals with us to make us more fruitful.

But wherever we see 'Almighty God' in the Word it speaks to us of His inexhaustible store of riches.

The one from whom comes every good and perfect gift.

His strength is made perfect in our weakness.

His sufficiency is made perfect in our insufficiency.

His fullness is made perfect in our emptiness.

As we drink and are filled, the rivers will flow from us to also shed forth His blessing

ADONAI

This is translated "Lord" and occurs about 300 times in the Old Testament. It is a plural form, again confirming the TRINITY. When referring to men as MASTER or LORD it is only ADON. When referring to God it is ADONAI. It infers that God is Lord and Master and as our owner demands our obedience.

Its first mention is in Gen 15 v 2, when Abram addresses God as ADONAI - JEHOVAH. Abram was himself ADON over many, but acknowledges here God's supreme authority

2 Sam 7 v 18 - 22 David refers to God as ADONAI- JEHOVAH and often in the Psalms,

e.g.. O, Lord, How excellent

Many of the Prophets were commissioned in that name and Isaiah 6 "Who will go for us? " Adonai is speaking.

Adonai is also carried into the New Testament These are the first words of Saul following conversion on Damascus road.

ADONAI

Acts 9 v 6 Adonai, what wilt thou have me to do? so often Saul calls himself a servant to His Lord and Master ( ADONAI)

The parable of the talents ( Matt 25 v 14 -30) shows ADONAI rewarding the faithfulness of His servants and punishing the lack of it.

There is a day of reckoning coming, and every servant's work will be tested by fire. ( 1 Cor 3 v 13 - 15)

There is a day of reckoning also for those who don't acknowledge His Lordship. Man is born to worship and serve ADONAI, and if he doesn't, then directly or indirectly he serves the devil. Romans 6 v 16.

The faithful servant to ADONAI looks forward to one day to hearing "well done thou good and faithful servant".

JEHOVAH - JIREH

These compound names of God portray Jehovah in some aspect of His character, as meeting human need, often the on-going revelation arose out of some historic moment.

JEHOVAH -JIREH arises in Genesis 22 where Elohim appears to Abraham with the command to sacrifice Isaac.

Repeat of I am Who I am

Gen 22 v 7 Behold the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?

God supplied a ram, and Abraham called the place JEHOVAH- JIREH Gen 22 v 14.

This relates especially to God seeing beforehand our need of a saviour - and providing Jesus for:-

JEHOVAH- ROPHE

Jehovah Rophe means Jehovah heals. The revelation of God as Healer comes in Exodus 15 v 22- 26.

Here Jehovah pledges Himself, on condition of their obedience to always be their healer. Healing relates to physical - moral and spiritual . How desperately mankind needs God's healing - in every sense.

The will - the power and the longing to heal are all present in Jehovah, and the only obstacle is man. The remedy is there.

Jesus is the Healer in the New Testament Luke 4 v 18 fulfilling Isaiah 61 v 1-2.

Jesus certainly healed physical sicknesses, but this was incidental to the healing of the souls of men. He healed leprosy – used in the Bible as a “type” of sin. He cast out demons and was always inviting men to "Come unto me ............find rest for your souls".

Jesus consummated His ministry by becoming that tree, bringing healing and life to mankind.

JEHOVAH- NISSI

Jehovah my Banner - Exodus 17 v 15

This name is revealed only a few weeks after the revelation of God as Healer at Marah. From Marah to Elim to the Wilderness of Sin to Rephadim where there was no water - and God brought forth water from the rock. Then Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim, and they were powerful enemies. Here, Moses held up his hands and Aaron and Hur came to help him. Joshua prevailed against the Amalekites with a mighty victory.

Exodus 17v15 Then Moses built an altar, and called it "The Lord is my Banner". In the natural Israel appeared ill- equipped and inexperienced, but they had God as their Banner. Yes, the intercession of Moses was wonderful, but he also had the rod of Elohim in his hand. Under God's raised banner - victory was answered.

Amalek represents hostility against God, and God is represented as lifting up a standard against the nations.

At the Red Sea - representing salvation - Stand still.

But now we must fight the good fight of faith. We'll fail in our own strength, but as we pray we shall prevail.

So, in New Testament, we are told in Eph. to be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. The Cross is our Banner and faith in Him is the assurance of Victory.

JEHOVAH-M'KADDESH

"Jehovah who sanctifies" Lev 20 v 8.

This title is important because it is repeated 6 times in the next 2 Chapters of Leviticus.

Sanctify means - to set apart, consecrate, dedicate. e.g.

• God sanctified the Sabbath

• God sanctified the Jewish feast days

• God sanctified places. Even the Holy Land is set apart.

• God sanctified people e.g.. Priesthood.

Jehovah Himself is set apart from the whole universe. He stands unique. He is the Holy One. The Spirit of God is the Holy Spirit

He wants us to be holy and set apart from the corruption of the world. God wants to impart the glory and beauty of His holiness to us.

Leviticus 19 v 2. God provided Israel with every incentive to holiness, but didn't over-ride their free-will. Holiness calls for man's continued exercise and choice.

The Lord Jesus Christ is our sanctifier.

1 Cor 1 v30. - Hebrews 10 v 10-14. 1 Peter 1 v 15-16. Eph. 1 v 4. John 17 v 19.

JEHOVAH - SHALOM

Jehovah is peace - Judges 6 v24

200 years have passed since Jehovah had revealed Himself as Jehovah M'kaddesh. a generation is here who doesn't know God in any of these revelations - so they were an unholy, sick, defeated people.

Gideon was threshing a little wheat when an angel of the Lord appeared with a promise of deliverance. In faith, he built an altar which he called Jehovah - Shalom in anticipation of victory and peace.

SHALOM is a lovely word and has lots of meanings - all good. The underlying meaning of each is harmony of relationships and reconciliation - often translated 'Peace'. Every blessing, temporal and spiritual is included in restoring man to peace with God - like before the fall.

JEHOVAH -TSIDKENU

Jehovah our Righteousness

It appears in Jeremiah 23 v 5-6. The spiritual yo-yo existence of Israel had not halted a downward trend - and at this time the country is in a shocking state - oppression and violence, heathen practices abounding and even the priests polluting God's house.

In this setting Jeremiah predicts judgement (Babylon) - but also that Israel would return from captivity and raise up to David a Righteous Branch who would be called Jehovah - Tsidkenu.

The word 'Tsedek' is used of full weight or measure in a spiritual sense toward God. It's a word used hundreds of times in the scriptures - also means to ' to declare innocent'

Jehovah is Himself perfect righteousness. He is the Rock whose work is perfect and all His ways are Just.

Deut 32 v 3-4, whereas we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God - and there is none righteous - no not one. Our righteousness is like filthy rags.

Jehovah cannot overlook the lack of righteousness in man - but in Old Testament the principle of substitution is taught - looking forward to Jesus - the Righteous Servant who would bear away our iniquities and impart to us His righteousness.

The Old Testament had glimpses e.g.. Isaiah 61v 10

In the New Testament we see 1 Cor 1 v30 & Romans 10 v 4

JEHOVAH - ROHI

Jehovah, My Shepherd Psalm 23 v 8

A psalm written from David - the shepherd - a revelation - The Lord is my Shepherd.

The primary meaning of ROHI is to feed or lead to pasture. Jehovah at various times promised to give the people "Shepherds or Pastors" according to “mine heart”, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding Jeremiah 3 v 15 God is very strong against false shepherds.

No other name of Jehovah has the same intimate and tender touch. See Isaiah 40 v 10 - 11 also Ezekiel 34 v 11 -16

The eastern shepherd knows his sheep by name - stays with them day and night - tends them when sick - protects them from wolves etc.

The Lord Jesus spoke of Himself as being the 'Good Shepherd' who lays down His life for the sheep - And He speaks of seeking the lost ones and rejoicing as they are found. As the Good Shepherd, His injunction to Peter before He went to heaven was "Feed My sheep".

He says "My sheep know my voice". We hear and obey and He will lead us to the final fold and rest in heaven.

JEHOVAH - SHAMMAH

'Jehovah is there' Ezekiel 48 - 35

By His various names, Jehovah has revealed Himself in His power and holiness as one who meets the needs of those He has created. This name is found in last verse of Ezekiel - and all his prophecies were received in captivity in Babylon. Having prophesied many years before about the fall of Jerusalem and the destruction of the temple, here many years later he brings a prophecy of hope and consolation.

The Glory of Jehovah would fill Jerusalem and the Temple and His presence would dwell there for ever.

David saw this too in Psalm 132 v 8,13, 14.

Ezekiel 43 v 1-7 It has a literal prophetic fulfillment - but also a spiritual one. When Jesus came He was Emmanuel 'God with us'. God was there. His presence now lives in the believer as we become "temples of the Holy Spirit" 1 Cor 3 v 16 & 2 Cor 6 v 16

The Church as a body is also called the habitation of God. But maybe its ultimate fulfillment will be in heaven . Rev 21 v 1-3
