August 2014

Welcome to 2nd Grade!

I am busy getting ready for our new year together! I’m sure you have lots of questions and hopefully I can help you with some answers!

All About Me

My name is Terry Foltiny and I have been teaching at OHES since January 2004. Before coming to OHES I worked at Indian Fields Elementary School in South Brunswick. I also had the good fortune to work at a cooperative nursery school for several years. I have been very fortunate to work with some extraordinary teachers that I now call friends!

I live in Kendall Park with my husband and daughter! We are getting ready for a new school year too! My youngest daughter is starting high school! My grown up children live in New Brunswick and Philadelphia.

I love to swim and try to get to the gym every day. It was nice swimming outdoors during the summer! My daughter and I were lucky to spend 3 weeks visiting my sister in Maine during August. Maine is beautiful and there was always something to do, but we sure did miss the warm water and sandy beaches of the Jersey shore!

I can’t wait to share my summer adventures and look forward to hearing about how your child spent their summer too!

Getting Ready for School

I started getting ready for this new school year in July when I I spent a week learning about Readers Workshop with a trainer from Columbia University’s Teachers College. I also attended some Math workshops with Amy Wish Director of Mathematics K – 4.

But as the days start getting shorter and the temperatures in Maine remind me of Fall I know it’s time to start getting ready for the school year schedule too.

To help your child you may want to have them start going to bed earlier. Researchers say that children this age need between 10 – 12 hours of sleep. Do your best to get your child as much sleep as possible.

You might also want to get them used to sitting down to eat a healthy breakfast.

The students will have a snack in the classroom each day. Please keep the snack peanut free until we know more about allergies. I will update you as I receive information to keep everyone safe. (If your child has an allergy please feel free to email the information.)

As long as it’s not too distracting, they may keep a water bottle on their desk.

Students will be eating lunch in the cafeteria and eating snack in class every day(even on early dismissal days).

Back to school shopping helps add to the excitement of this time. On the first day your child should bring the essential items listed on the 2nd grade supply list (on the OHES webpage) There will be plenty of school supplies ready and waiting at school so if it’s not on the list you don’t need to buy it!

Please label everything with your child’s first and last name!

Comfortable footwear is recommended!

Students must wear sneakers on PE days. Sneakers are a great choice for everyday especially for the playground - woodchips, little feet . . . need I say more?

Communications

The best way to reach me is e-mail at tfoltiny@mtsd.us. I check my e-mail during the day at school and from home. The next best way to reach me is “backpack mail” via your child’s take home folder. Students quickly learn to place notes from home in the red note basket in our class, but a reminder from you before they leave for school is appreciated!

Dismissal Procedure

If your child has a change in dismissal on a given day please write a note. At the end of the day I take the notes from the red basket and put them in your child’s hand. This is very reassuring to them and the teachers helping with dismissal.

Children must follow their normal routine if I do not have a signed note stating otherwise. Check out our “Important Information” tab for more info about dismissal notes.

IMPORTANT!

If there will be a change to your child’s dismissal during the school day, call the office and speak to someone in person. They will contact me! Do not leave an e-mail or phone message, as I may not get it in time!

First Day Jitters

The first day of school is an exciting day for us all. If your child is experiencing jitters, the best thing to do is have them get on the school bus. As a parent this advice sounds counter to what my heart tells me, but the school bus really does help! It’s exciting for your child to climb on the big bus and see all the other children! Driving your child to school the first day will only prolong the anxiety for both of you!

If your child will take the bus home, I highly recommend that they take the bus home the first few days to get them used to the routine.

Check Out Our Class Webpage!

On the webpage you will find important information and newsletters. This will be the first place to look when you have questions about class policies and things that are going on in our classroom!

To get to the website please go to mtsd.k12.nj.us and choose OHES. Click on Faculty Webpages at the top and then click on Foltiny, Terry. Check out the other links on the website as well! Going in through the Montgomery and OHES websites will help keep you up to date on important information!
