Dear Parents and Guardians:

The work we have ahead of us as parents in the middle of this world crisis is like nothing we have experienced in our lifetimes. While I am preparing our school for home instruction, I am also preparing my family and home for what lies ahead. Now more than ever, it is imperative that you stay on top of your child’s progress.

We have provided Chromebooks to each student that needs them along with wifi through a hotspot Smartphone program that we partnered with this summer. All students should be fully ready for remote learning at this time. If you do not have, or lose wifi connection at any point, Spectrum is offering students free internet amid school closures. To enroll in the program, call (844) 488-8395. If for some reason, you have issues with your device while schools are closed, you can pick up a wifi ready device from the DOE. The remote learning device form can be found here:

All assignments, resources, videos, etc the students are expected to complete will be posted to Google Classroom. We have been using the system for years and your child is familiar with it. Ask them for a tutorial (see links below). If you have yet to log in to Jupitergrades, see attached for your log in. Your tracking will assist your child in this process greatly!

Below are the daily expectations for your child for Remote Learning:

EXPECTATIONS FOR STUDENTS

• Students must have an active and working Google Classroom and Jupiter Grades accounts. If they do not, email Mr. Fox.

• Students will check email regularly (at least twice per day).

• Students will begin independent work beginning March 23, 2020. (They may begin now if they choose.)

• Students will participate in virtual meetings with teachers during online meeting times through Webex Meetings.

• The meetings are designed to be check-ins, Q & A sessions, and mini-lessons; they are an opportunity for students to ask clarifying questions and receive answers in real time.

• Students are expected to complete assignments in a timely manner and/or reach out for support if they feel they can’t complete an assignment during this difficult time.

• If students need any additional supports regarding learning or their overall well-being, please contact one of the following staff members:

Ms. Bradley, 9th/10th grade Guidance Counselor – ccook5@schools.

Ms. Dane, 11th/12th grade Guidance Counselor – ddane@schools.

Mr. Fox, Assistant Principal and Remote Learning Lead – rfox4@schools.

Ms. Rodriguez, Parent Coordinator – hrodriguez19@schools.

As parents, it would be helpful to make sure that students stay on a schedule. Routines will be incredibly important for students. Their day should be structured and look like a regular school day. Here is an example of a schedule of what a Monday might look like:

Your child’s teachers will be uploading videos to Google Classroom and Jupitergrades via a new video conferencing system that we plan to use called Webex. Your child will be able to join classes live to receive assistance with their work (think of it as tutoring) and will also receive instructional videos to watch to aid them in completing their assignments. Feel free to watch those with your child and get assistance! Here is the schedule that your child will be logging in to their teachers “virtual classrooms.”

First marking period report cards are enclosed. We are sorry that the city cancelled parent conferences. However we want to keep you up to date as to your child’s progress. It is important that you take time with your child to discuss their academic performance. As I stated in my opening letter to you, I believe education is a three-way street. Your presence goes a long way toward your child’s success!

Please visit our school’s website at for the latest school information or contact us should you need any assistance whatsoever. We are still here for you every day like we normally would be if you were walking through our hallways. Stay in constant touch! Your UNHS family is here for you!

Sincerely,

Matthew Willie

Principal
