THE SUFFERING SERVANT V Text: Isaiah 53:10-12 Date: 9/20/20 Sunday AMWe come now to the fifth and final stanza of “The Suffering Servant’s Song” of Isaiah 53. Let’s consider these questions…Did the “Suffering Servant” do the will of His Father in heaven? Did He accomplish it to perfection? Was His work sufficient for those who needed it? For those that required it? Was the Father pleased and satisfied with what the Suffering Servant accomplished? There are many other questions that we could ask, but these are sufficient for today! These fifteen verses perfectly describe the life and ministry of Jesus in relation to the redemption of sinners. Every major doctrine relating to the substitutionary death of Christ and the satisfaction of God’s wrath for sin are clearly taught in Isaiah 53. Even the simplest reading of this passage points sinners to the cross of Christ, His empty tomb and His glorious ascension back to the Father’s right hand. I would encourage you to read it slowly and thoughtfully and to glory in the Lord’s salvation that is abundant in Jesus Christ! Give Him glory for His profound work of redemption in your life! I. First, We see The Humiliation of the Servant – 53:10 Isaiah 53:10 (KJV) Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise/crush Him; He hath put Him to grief: when thou shalt make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand. The Prophet Isaiah is speaking here in 53:10-11A. 53:10A ~ First, His Suffering (Does this sound strange to you?)Isaiah 53:10 (KJV) Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise/crush Him; He hath put Him to grief: Questions: Who killed Jesus? Was it the Jews? Maybe the Romans? Was it the Sanhedrin? OR, was it GOD Himself? WAS THIS BRUISING AND CRUSHING FROM THE HAND OF HIS FATHER??? YES!!! Zechariah the Prophet gives us this insight in 13:7 (KJV) Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd, and against the man that is My fellow, saith the LORD of Hosts: Luke adds this in Acts 2:23 (KJV) Him/Jesus, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God. Paul weighs in with Romans 4:25 (KJV) Who was delivered for our offences… Romans 8:32 (KJV) He that spared not His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all…-915670208280Who for the joy that was set before Him, endured the cross… for what it would produce!00Who for the joy that was set before Him, endured the cross… for what it would produce!John MacArthur explains, “God’s delight and God’s pleasure in crushing His Son in this way was not in His pain, but in His purpose.? It was not in His agony; it was in His accomplishment.? It was not in His suffering; it was in His salvation. It was the outcome that pleased God, not the pain.? But the pain and the agony were necessary."53:10A ~ “He hath put Him to grief” ~ Jesus did not just die. He grieved (mental and emotional pain) as He suffered and died. His grief was due to the heavy hand of His Father in judgment! This was a debilitating death that Jesus endured for hours, for us! My God, My God were not just idle words! These were not words of anger or frustration! If anything, they expressed the depth of Jesus’ grief. 53:10B ~ Secondly, His SubstitutionIsaiah 53:10 (KJV) When Thou shalt make His soul an offering for sin… (The most complete offering for sin.) Jesus was delivered up, and He was sacrificed for sin. Jesus was an “offering” for our sins that we might be reconciled to God! Yes, HE DIED! Yet, HE’S NOT FINISHED!“Soul” = the giving of His very life! “Offering” = Jesus willingly, without protest, gave His life for us! Jesus spoke of this in John 10:18 (KJV) No man taketh it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of My Father. Jesus’ atoning sacrifice makes “His seed” a reality! 53:10C ~ Thirdly, His Seed Isaiah 53:10 (KJV) He shall see His seed/spiritual offspring, He shall prolong His days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand. So we can gloriously conclude that His bruising/crushing did not end His life or dash our hopes! 53:10C ~ Three phrases close this verse. What do they mean? “He shall see His seed (spiritual offspring), He shall prolong His days (resurrection), and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper/succeed in His hand.” He sees His offspring/seed… which means He’s alive! He’s risen! He defeated death and lives forever with His seed, His saints to reign! Glory to God! God was pleased with the work of His Son on behalf of His offspring!Psalm 16:10 (KJV) For Thou wilt not leave My soul in hell; neither wilt Thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.John 1:12-13 (Spiritual offspring) But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.John MacArthur glories in this truth, “He will live to see His seed/posterity.? He ever lives to see His children.? He will see His bride complete.? He will see His flock gathered into glory.? He will see His children.? Amazing reality.”Hebrews 2:10 also speaks of His spiritual offspring! (KJV) For it became Him, for Whom are all things, and by Whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.First, We see The Humiliation of the Servant – 53:10 II. Secondly, We see The Satisfaction of the Servant – 53:11Isaiah 53:11 (KJV) He shall see of the travail/anguish of His soul, and shall be satisfied: by His knowledge shall My Righteous Servant justify many; for He shall bear their iniquities.Paraphrased… Jesus gets what He paid for, AND not one is lost! 53:11A ~ He shall see of the travail/anguish of His soul, and shall be satisfied: [This speaks of a triumphant death!]My ESV Study Bible says ~ The outcome of the servant’s sufferings is not regret but the satisfaction of obvious accomplishment.?God’s purposes in redemption were fulfilled through the travail/anguish of Jesus’ soul. Jesus labored not in vain! He shall see His church and the fruit thereof. He will justify “the many” and see them sanctified and finally glorified! This will bring Him fullness of satisfaction! His death purchased our life! Amen!!! Spurgeon –?“He hath poured out His soul unto death.” I will say no more about it, except that you see how complete it was. Jesus gave poor sinners everything. His every faculty was laid out for them. To His last rag He was stripped upon the cross. No part of His body or of His soul was kept back from being made a sacrifice. The last drop, as I said before, was poured out till the cup was drained. He made no reserve: He kept not back even His innermost self: “He hath poured out His soul unto death.” Thank You Jesus!Literally, Jesus gave His everything for us! His whole being was poured out as a satisfying offering before His Father!G. Campbell Morgan said, "Jesus Christ took our hell so we could take His heaven."53:11B ~ “by His knowledge shall My Righteous Servant justify many; for He shall bear (the responsibility) for their iniquities.”Matthew Henry explains, “He shall have the glory of obtaining an incontestable victory and universal dominion.” Cliff Barrows tells of the time his two young children did something wrong. Although they were gently warned, they repeated the offense and needed to be disciplined. Cliff’s tender heart was pained at the thought of having to punish the ones he loved. So he called Bobby and Bettie into his room, removed his belt and shirt, and with bare back he knelt by his bed. He told each child to whip him 10 times. Oh, how they cried! But the penalty had to be paid. The children sobbed as they lashed their daddy’s back. Then Cliff hugged and kissed them, and they prayed together. “It hurt,” he recalls, “but I never had to spank them again.”53:11B ~ “by His knowledge shall My Righteous Servant justify many; for He shall bear their iniquities.” Substitutionary Atonement… His righteousness for our sins!!! Not a tinge of self-righteousness or good works here! NONE! ZERO! Out of His travail/anguish our sins are atoned for! It’s ALL ABOUT JESUS! First, We see The Humiliation of the Servant – 53:10 Secondly, We see The Satisfaction of the Servant – 53:11III. Thirdly, We see The Exaltation of the Servant – 53:12Isaiah 53:12 (KJV) Therefore will I divide Him a portion with the great/many, and He shall divide the spoil with the strong; because HE (and none other) hath poured out HIS soul unto death: and HE was numbered with the transgressors; and HE bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. This is the climax of the song. Everything flows into the reservoir of 53:12. 53:12 ~ “I” tells us that God is speaking here. God’s words highlight the Servant’s reward for His sacrificial offering on behalf of sinners! It reflects His accomplishments as Israel’s Messiah and the Savior of the world! This is the apex of the Servant’s work… the beauty of redemption in Christ! The “many” and the “strong” are His inheritance… absolutely! Blood bought spoils!!!BUT not only are we His inheritance; but we have an inheritance as well! We are Heirs and Joint Heirs with Christ! Listen to Romans 8:17 (KJV) And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs/co-heirs with Christ!!! Romans 8:37 (KJV) Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us.Revelation 3:21 (KJV) To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with Me in My throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with My Father in His throne.Max Lucado said –?“You can’t go to the cross with just your head and not your heart. It doesn’t work that way. Calvary is not a mental trip. It’s not an intellectual exercise. It’s a heart-splitting hour of emotion.…?That’s God on that cross. It’s us who put Him there.”As the Reconciler of God to man and man to God, HE MUST BE THE GOD MAN! Jesus gave Himself unto death… for sin! Death was involved, as was the shedding of blood! Both are required for a full and complete atonement! 1 Timothy 2:5 (KJV) For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;Jesus is the friend of sinners. He will represent you before the Father. Without Jesus you have no hope! Jesus has won the victory over death, hell and the grave for us! Glory!!!Luke 15:10 says Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.First, We see The Humiliation of the Servant – 53:10 Secondly, We see The Satisfaction of the Servant – 53:11Thirdly, We see The Exaltation of the Servant – 53:12 ................
