Beacon Community Church

Sunday 7th June - Trinity Sunday

Good morning everyone and welcome to our Sunday service from Beacon Community Church. As your Pastor I need to step back this weekend and give my body and mind some space and time to rest and adjust to new medication. Charlie and Mary kindly offered to assist me and as such I have asked them to prepare and deliver this week's service. In the meantime I value your prayers for healing and restoration. Yours in Christ, Pastor Paul and Claire.

Opening prayer - Heavenly father, you are our creator, our provider and our protector. Through your goodness and grace, we are free to gather together this morning to offer praise and worship to you. Holy Lord, we commit all of our good deeds to you and ask that everything we do here today be done for your kingdom and your glory. Amen

It has been another week of mixed emotions. The sadness of saying goodbye to our sister Mabel was softened somewhat in the knowledge that her family really valued the service performed by Paul, and the fitting tribute provided by those who lined up outside church to pay their last respects. There were more marbles needed for our ever increasing box of answered prayers. There were also happy birthday celebrations for Ben Walters, Maisie Goodwin (21 yesterday) and Alan Oldroyd who has reached “60 not out”. However, each day is also seeing more sad news of the pandemics of COVID and Racism. We will return to prayer about these matters later in the service.

Our first tune – We Will Magnify -

O Lord our God how majestic is Your name, The earth is filled with Your glory,

O Lord our God You are robed in majesty, You’ve set Your glory above the heavens

We will magnify, we will magnify, The Lord enthroned in heaven x2

O Lord our God you have established a throne, You reign in righteousness and splendour, O Lord our God the skies are ringing with your Praise -

Soon those on earth will come to worship

We will magnify, we will magnify, The Lord enthroned in heaven x2

O Lord our God the world was made at your command

In You all things now hold together.

Now to Him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb

Be praise and glory and power forever

We will magnify, we will magnify, The Lord enthroned in heaven x2

Children;

We start with a golden oldie that older members of your family may know better, but it's a great way to learn how to praise God. As you listen you might feel like dancing or clapping. The words go something like this;

“Praise Him, praise Him, praise Him in the morning, praise Him in the noontime, praise Him, praise Him, praise Him when the sun goes down! Love Him, love Him, love Him...Serve Him, serve Him, Serve Him

Message - Psalm 8 (NLT)

Scripture below or use video -

1 O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth!

Your glory is higher than the heavens.

2 You have taught children and infants to tell of your strength,

silencing your enemies and all who oppose you.

3 When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers -

the moon and the stars you set in place —

4 what are mere mortals that you should think about them,

human beings that you should care for them?

5 Yet you made them only a little lower than God

and crowned them with glory and honour.

6 You gave them charge of everything you made,

putting all things under their authority—

7 The flocks and the herds – and all the wild animals.

8 The birds in the sky, the fish of the sea,

and everything that swims the ocean currents.

9 O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth!

May the words I speak be a blessing to us all, and may we learn a little more of what a marvellous God we have as our Lord and Saviour.

I hope you agree with me that this is an awesome bit of bible – that reminds us what a wonderful God we have and that He makes us part of His plan of salvation. You may have noticed, reading through it, that the first and last verses are like 2 bookends – just to make sure we remember that we ought to praise Him with and for everything.

I find it mind-boggling when you think about it, that David the psalm writer mentions the heavens in verse 3, when back in the day he wouldn’t have a clue that’s there are calculated to be 300 billion stars in the sky, and that earth is a mere 95 million miles from the sun. Makes you gasp in wonder and amazement – or at least that's what it does to me.

I know our view of the night sky is not so good with all the city sodium lighting we have to contend with, but hopefully you will have experienced at some point, being able to marvel at how many stars there are and the ever changing moon – through all its courses above, and that they come out night after night and promises that they will do until He returns.

Then he says that we are only just below angels in the pecking order – no pressure then, and that he’s put us in charge of looking after all His creation.

Let us have a reminder of how we ought to humbly come to Him each and everyday

Song 3 – 10,000 reasons

Bless the Lord, Oh my soul, Oh my soul, worship his holy name

Sing like never before, Oh my soul, I'll worship your holy name

The sun comes up, it's a new day dawning, It's time to sing your song again.

Whatever may pass and whatever lies before me,

Let me be singing when the evening comes

Bless the Lord, Oh my soul, Oh my soul, worship his holy name

Sing like never before, Oh my soul, I'll worship Your holy name.

You're rich in love and You're slow to anger,

Your name is great and Your heart is kind.

For all Your goodness, I will keep on singing,

Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find

Bless the Lord, Oh my soul, Oh my soul, worship His holy name.

Sing like never before, Oh my soul, I'll worship Your holy name

And on that day when my strength is failing,

The end draws near and my time has come.

Still my soul will sing Your praise unending

Ten thousand years and then for evermore (for evermore)

Bless the Lord, Oh my soul, Oh my soul, worship His holy name

Sing like never before, Oh my soul, I'll worship Your holy name

Bless the Lord, Oh my soul, Oh my soul, worship His holy name

Sing like never before, Oh my soul, I'll worship Your holy name

Yes, I will worship Your holy name, Lord I'll worship Your holy name.

Sing like never before, Oh my soul, I'll worship Your holy name,

Jesus, I will worship your Holy name, worship your holy name.

This week, and weeks past, has shown us the good, the bad and the ugly of how people treat each other and the environment we live in. We are custodians and guardians and it hurts to see. What we are witnessing is effectively what life would be like with no God, no love and no care or concern for our fellow human beings.

We must pray that the hopeless and loveless situations facing us are turned into opportunities for God to change hearts and minds. We are here to shine a light and lead others through faith, trust and love. Making sure that in the process you Lord are the at the start, the end – and everything in between.

If anything good does come from lockdown then it might also be the way people think about how we live on this planet. The choices we make - for transport, recycling, food and what we waste. Let’s think before we drink – do we need to use plastic? Let’s be eco friendly warriors all the way. Give God’s creation a chance.

Let’s consider what we’ve been put on earth to do and be, how awesome our God is and why we have the hope we have, where we’re at on our journey with God and let’s live it out for others to see.

When you have a moment you can check out that parts of this psalm are mentioned in the New Testament – in Matthew 21:16, 1 Corinthians 15:27, Hebrews 2:6-9 because Martin Luther said that this psalm is a prophecy concerning Christ – His passion and resurrection. Now you know.

Let us have a brief time of prayer...

Lord we thank you for the gift of life and your beautiful creation that we ought to treat it as a precious part of your life plan. We thank you for those who have gone on before us to a heavenly home. Give peace of mind to those who are anxious during these days of uncertainty – help them to be bold and not afraid, because you have said ‘do not be afraid for I am with you wherever you go’, that you love us as far as the east is from the west and we can take comfort and strength from knowing that.

Refresh Pastor Paul we pray and give him rest as a faithful servant. You say ‘come unto me all ye who are weary and I will give you rest’. Thank you that we can find that with you our merciful and gracious Saviour.

In all our comings and goings Lord guide us in all we do. May we be beacons of light.

Final hymn – just to briefly remind ourselves that today is Trinity Sunday – which I think is encompassed in this closing song – Doxology

Praise God from whom all blessings flow

Praise Him all creatures here below

Praise Him above ye heavenly hosts

Praise father, son and holy ghost.

Our final words and blessing for today;

I bind unto myself today

the power of God to hold and lead,

God’s eye to watch, God’s might to stay,

God’s ear to hearken to my need,

the wisdom of my God to teach,

God’s hand to guide, God’s shield to ward,

the word of God to give me speech,

God’s heavenly host to be my guard.

Christ be with me, Christ within me,

Christ behind me, Christ before me,

Christ beside me, Christ to win me,

Christ to comfort and restore me.

Christ beneath me, Christ above me,

Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,

Christ in hearts of all that love me,

Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

Take care, God bless, keep the faith.

Amen
