Resumé Placement

[Pages:5]Resum? Placement

Now it's time for a reality check. Of 100 resum?s submitted on average for a position, typically only 10 applicants receive an interview, 3 are strongly considered for the position and 1 is offered the job. In job placement there is no such thing as second place.

It is also important to note that obtaining a new job is a process that requires more than a couple days. On average it takes one week to prepare and distribute a resum?. It takes another week before securing your first interview which usually isn't followed by a second interview until week three. If you're lucky you'll be offered a job by week four. If you're lucky. Once a job offer is accepted the employer typically waits the customary two weeks before expecting you at work. Even in an ideal world, it could take, on average, 5 or 6 weeks before you start a new job.

Some say that for every $10,000 a year you hope to earn, you should expect to spend one month looking for that job. In other words, if you wish to make $30,000 per year you should be on the hunt for 3 months before given that golden offer.

With this in mind, you should know that the purpose of this portion of UAC's Job Placement Assistance Program is to help you get that next interview. In addition to this it also helps alleviate two very common, yet unpleasant feelings associated with the job search. Many individuals searching for employment may experience depression coupled with feelings of low self worth. Realize that this program is designed to help you avoid such feelings while securing more interviews.

First, we'll help you do everything humanly possible to get your resum? into the right hands so that at the end of the week you don't question your efforts. Second, you need to acknowledge that getting a new job is a full-time job in and of itself.

The following is a daily routine that has proven to be successful in finding employment:

Sunday

Review the Help Wanted sections of those publications of your desired locale. At this point you must determine whether or not you're willing to relocate; the ability to relocate will increase your options.

Start first with the local job listings. Understand that listings can be found in many publications: daily newspapers, local weekly circulars, employment guides, etc. When

searching the listings be sure that you look not only in the accounting and bookkeeping sections but the office management and administrative sections as well.

Monday

Submit your resum? via fax, email or mail to those listings which match your interests. Always aim high. Apply to all the positions you are interested in and capable of doing, and let the employer decide whether or not you're a good match.

Tuesday

Visit all local government and church agencies committed to helping residents find employment. There often are federal, state and even local agencies that can provide counseling and support. Often these organizations work with local businesses and government agencies to fill positions. Know that many of these centers will offer free training, testing and assistance.

In many communities churches also provide job placement assistance regardless of whether or not you are a member of their congregation.

Visit these centers weekly to see what new positions have become available. These regular visits also remind the staff of your continued interests and needs. Remember it's not only important what you know but who you know.

Wednesday

Every Wednesday your attention needs to focus on staffing agencies. Excluding small communities, almost every city has staffing agencies, or, as some people like to refer to them, temp agencies. There are three types of staffing agencies:

? Generalists ? Specialists ? Permanent Placement (Head Hunters)

Generalist agencies are those that either fill most positions or focus on clerical or office staff.

Specialist agencies focus on skill sets. You would be interested in those that emphasize accounting, bookkeeping and tax like Accountemps, Ajilon Finance, and Accountants Inc. They may focus on entry level accounting opportunities, but more often they are filling mid to upper level positions in the accounting profession.

The Permanent Placement companies, like Robert Half International, are interested in hiring individuals for long-term term employment rather than temporary positions.

You will not be charged for a staffing agency's services; the clients/employers are billed for this assistance. This is a win/win situation for applicants. These agencies make nothing until you are put to work, evidence that they will do all they can to find you employment. They have the contacts that you don't and will work to not only to find you employment but to assure you are paid what you are worth; in the end, your employer will pay the agency a percentage of your salary. They become an agent working in your best interests.

Friday

This is the day designated for networking. Let's begin with a statement used earlier: it's not what you know but who you know. Some statistics say as many as 75% of all positions are filled as a result of networking.

Friday you must accomplish two things. First, inform friends and family, etc, that you are looking for a job. Explain what you hope to find in a new position.

Second, spend time with those who care about you. Get to know your neighbors and when the conversation shifts to employment, briefly share your situation. This will bolster your spirits as you begin the weekend knowing that you have done everything in your power this week to find a new position. Too often the job hunt can become depressing as it may seem no one is acknowledging your value. Friday is the day to surround yourself with those who will celebrate your worth. The motto for the day is to get out of the house.

Saturday

Take a vacation from the job search. Go to the park, read a book, or watch a movie. Mentally unwind and get ready for the upcoming week.
