SI of East Contra Costa Installation of Officers

SI of Pittsburg Installation of Officers

June 29, 2013

Jackie, you were well educated about Soroptimist, way before you even became a member, supporting me in my leadership journey when we worked together. Thank you for inviting me to act as your installing officer.

Soroptimist International of Pittsburg had another successful year; once again children benefited from Kids on Target; the club hosted another profitable Festa Italiana fundraiser; hosted a “Coffee for a Cause” event raising over $1,000 dollars for the Women’s Opportunity Award, participated in our District II Identifying project “Get Real Academy”, and supported Region (Fellowship), Federation (giving 10% to Club Giving) and International projects. You have much to be proud of.

As your club ends the year, it is an excellent time to thank the 2012-2013 board for a productive year. Outgoing President Timi’s theme was "Embracing a Changing World", and the club did just that. Will the outgoing officers please stand (or give a wave). Let’s give them a round of applause for their dedication, leadership and hard work. Thank you, you may sit down.

Now, as an installing officer you try to tailor an installation to the presidents theme or personality. Let’s see how I do…

Incoming President Jackie’s theme this year is “FUNdraising, Friendship and Fireworks”. The three F’s… (Be good John) So, I thought, and I thought and I thought some more. Fundraising…okay, the idea that comes to mind does need some “Fundraising” to get there; you do have fun, once you enter. You often go with friends and the evening always ends with fireworks. And, best of all incoming President Jackie and her family love to go there. I am thinking Disneyland, well more precisely Disney.

Walt Disney once said: “If you can dream it, you can do it.” – Much like Soroptimist who are in the business of making dreams come true with our Women’s Opportunity Award.

Now, follow me here as I precariously make my way through the theme of this installation ceremony…

Once again thinking… Disney, Disneyland…princesses…Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel…no, I’ve got it Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Ah, increased collective impact.

Yes, that ties it all together…

Please sit back, relax and wish me luck.

Long ago, in a faraway kingdom, there lived a lovely young princess named Snow White.

Delegates and officers, please come forward when I call your name.

Delegates –Jackie Buccellato, Margie Rognlien & Lynn Havens

Jackie, Margie and Lynn, you will serve as club delegates. While DELEGATES are not voting members of the board, they do represent the club at district meetings and region conferences. To you is given the responsibility of voting on behalf of all your members, speaking for their concerns and, most important, bringing back complete information concerning all Soroptimist matters that affect your club and its members. It is therefore your duty to be informed about matters on which a vote is to be taken and to know how your club members feel about it, informed, not instructed. I present you with these Mickey Mouse bookmarks. To assist you as you study proposed amendments and nominee resumes for the 2014-2016 biennium.

Do you accept the responsibilities of this position? Thank you, Jackie and Margie, you may go back to your seats.

Delegate Lynn

In order for this story to be properly told, you must play the very important part of a character with special traits: flexibility, resourcefulness and a sense of humor - DOPEY. Dopey has an easy going personality and always gets the job done – perfect for a club delegate. (and Dopey is the most popular of the seven dwarfs.) Thank you, you may be seated.

Directors – Gloria Soderbery & Timi Tumbaga

Gloria and Timi you are the Directors of your club. Your duties are to serve with the officers on the board and, as a group administer control over the affairs, funds and the property of the club. You are the important conduit between the members and the board always available to make sure every voice is heard…both Grumpy (Gloria) and Bashful (Timi). The two of you must find the balance between grumpy and bashful members, making sure that every voice is heard. Gloria, I present you with this GRUMPY figurine and Timi, you get BASHFUL.

Do you accept the responsibilities of your position? Please remain here. Thank you

Treasurer Doris Bedford & Assistant Treasurer Wendy Anderson

Doris and Wendy the club has given you their vote as treasurer and assistant treasurer. Good records are a must. You both will receive the funds of the club. Doris you will deposit them in the financial institution as authorized by the board. You will sign all checks, make remittances as required by federation bylaws and region and club procedures and pay authorized bills. You shall keep your board and membership informed through monthly financial reports. Wendy, you will assist Doris. You both will serve as ex-officio members of the finance committee and make sure that the club books are reviewed on a yearly basis to ensure that everything adds up.

Although the bottom line can sometimes be boring and produce an allergic reaction here or there, you never want to be SLEEPY (Doris) or SNEEZY (Wendy) while tackling these tasks. I present you with these cute reminders.

Do you accept the responsibilities of your position? Thank you

Secretary Sharon Sobel Idul

Sharon, you were elected secretary of the club. You are responsible for the club’s success through communication. As such you will send out notices and handle all the club correspondence. A willing secretary can take much of the load from the president, build good will and understanding and enhance the club image. Additionally, you are the custodian of the club’s permanent records. You will take the minutes at business and board meetings, and keep track of the recommendations of the board. You must write your records with clarity and facts. Your words will carry your club’s achievements throughout history. You and your communication should always be HAPPY.

Do you accept the responsibilities of your position? Thank you.

Vice President Margie Rognlien

Margie, you were elected by your club to the office of Vice President – You must be readily available to serve in the absence of the president during club meetings and at Presidents Round Tables. You also serve as the program chair, which is extremely important; your programs should find a balance between shaping the future of Soroptimist through Increased Collective Impact and club and community needs. Most importantly you must assist President Jackie by acting as a sounding board and confidante. You must have excellent study skills, just like DOC.

Do you accept the responsibilities of your position? Thank you.

President – Jackie Buccellato

Snow White, the fairest in the land…Jackie you were elected by your club to serve as President. Your duties shall be those as implied by the title. You shall preside at all meetings, carry out the policy of the club and represent to the community the spirit and character of Soroptimist. As important as the club bylaws are, and as meticulous as they are in setting forth your duties, they constitute only a partial list. Worthy of note are the leadership qualities that your club knows you possess – wisdom, patience and understanding. As the presiding officer, you must be fair, tactful and just, and above all gentle and kind. A lot like Snow White (hand Jackie figurine), sweet and cheerful, and how about those organizational skills. Snow White had those dwarfs moving in one direction clearly demonstrating increased collective impact. Jackie, common sense and willingness will carry you far. Additionally, you must be alert to the changing needs in your community and knowledgeable about region, federation and international aims.

I also present you with this Magic Mirror with hopes that whenever you look into this mirror, it reflects all the success of Soroptimist International of Pittsburg (SI Pittsburg – the fairest in the land.) and this Disney princess bag to carry all your meeting agendas, club bylaws, region bylaws, information from the Founder Region board and much more.

Do you accept these responsibilities?

Officers, I ask each of you to pledge to do your best to carry out the requirements of your respective offices. I challenge you to be tolerant, give praise and encouragement, listen, understand, share yourself – most of all have vision for your clubs future. Embrace the wave of change.

As the steering force of your club, your duties are as numerous and diverse as you. By being individuals who serve together and compliment each other, you bring your own special talents to your club.

I now declare these officers duly installed in the offices to which they were elected for the 2013-2014 club year.

Club members, I know you will pledge your very best in supporting your new officers.

Ah…(look at board & then club members)…a perfect picture of increased collective impact. I can envision all of you “Whistling While You Work” right now.

(give Jackie the book)

May you all live happily ever after!

Congratulations and thank you.
