|Setting (in class, in computer lab, other?) |In the computer lab if it is available. If not in the classroom on the smart-board, with the |

| |students taking turns interacting with the website. |

|Technology needed to complete lesson |I will need one computer for each child, 20 computers in total, and a smart-board for me to help |

| |explain the website and expectations before the students explore on their own. If it is done in |

| |the classroom, then I will only need the projector and smart-board that is already set up. |

|Other materials needed |Twenty copies of blank maps of the United States with a list of all fifty states. Also 20 copies |

| |of blank maps containing the continents and the oceans. The students will fill these out after the|

| |lesson. |

|Title of web site |Geography in 2nd Grade |

|Topic of Lesson |The lesson will be about Geography, specifically reading maps, bodies of water, landforms, and US |

| |geography. |

|Goals of the Lesson |By the end of the lesson, I would like my students to be able to find large landmasses on a map |

| |using their knowledge of hemispheres, compasses, and continents. Also I would like them to be able|

| |to identify different types of landmasses and bodies of water. |

|Three Objectives |Students will be able to correctly write in the names of at least 35 of the 50 states when given a |

| |blank map of the US and a list of all states at the end of the lesson. |

| | |

| |Students will be able to correctly label all seven continents and five oceans when presented with a|

| |blank map. |

| | |

| |Students will be able to define different types of landmasses and bodies of water when asked to |

| |explain the words in discussion after the lesson. |

|Technology standard | |

| | |

| |1. Recognize that water, rocks, soil, and living organisms are found on the Earth’s surface. |

|Introduction of Lesson |To start the lesson, the students will each be at their own computer with the website open on their|

| |screen in the computer lab.If not in the computer lab, they will be at their desks looking at the |

| |website on the smart-board. To start the lesson I will ask the students some questions to see what|

| |they already know about the information in the lesson. |

| | |

| |What is the planet we live on? |

| |What covers the majority of its surface? |

| |What continent do we live on? |

| |What ocean does MA touch? |

| | |

|Lesson Procedure, Web Site Use, and |Once the students have started thinking about geography and the planet read them a few facts about |

|Technology Standard |the earth, on the home page. |

| |After moving on to the next page, reading maps. Have your students follow along on their own |

| |computer if possible. Point to one of the pictures on the page and tell the students what it is |

| |called. Then ask the students if they know what it is before reading the definition to them. |

| |Continue this until you are finished with all the pictures and words. |

| |When you finish this page ask students to tell you where the US is when compared to the equator and|

| |what hemisphere it is in. |

| |Next continue to the next page, bodies of water. Go through this page the same as you did for |

| |reading maps. At the end of this page ask the students if they can tell you the difference between|

| |a lake and a river. |

| |Following this go to the landforms page and go over the content like the other two pages. Ask the |

| |students if they know what continent the US is on. |

| |After go to the US geography page and go over it like you did the other pages. After going over |

| |this page there is a short you-tube video for the students to watch, a girl naming all 50 states. |

| |Then they can play with the Google-map and to get a better picture of the layout of the US and its |

| |states. |

| |After you are done going through all the content pages give the students time to explore the cite |

| |themselves. You can tell them about the quiz page and games page if they want to test their |

| |knowledge. |

| |At the end of the lesson show the students the reference page. |

| |Explain to the students that each references is a link to the website where you found content for |

| |your website. Click on some of the references so that the students can see this. |

| |Incorporate the technology lesson and tell the students that when you use information from |

| |somewhere else you need to list them in your references. You have to give people credit for their |

| |work or else you may get in trouble. |

|How will students be assessed? |The students will be assessed through the use of worksheets and labeling maps. The lesson goes |

| |along with geography lessons that they are learning about in school, and the US geography is |

| |something they have been working on all year. During their morning work the students take turns |

| |trying to label one state on the board, with the help of this lesson the students should be able to|

| |label more than half the states. |

|How will you know if students have met the |1. Students will be able to correctly write in the names of at least 35 of the 50 states when given|

|objectives stated above? |a blank map of the US and a list of all states at the end of the lesson. |

| | |

| |2. Students will be able to correctly label all seven continents and five oceans when presented |

| |with a blank map. |

| | |

| |3. Students will be able to define different types of landmasses and bodies of water when asked to |

| |explain the words in discussion after the lesson. |

| | |

| |1 and 2 will be assessed the same way, using worksheets given to the students at the end of the |

| |lesson. If the students can label the maps correctly then the first two objectives will have been |

| |met. The games during the lesson will give students a chance to practice labeling maps and the |

| |knowledge can be used later during morning work. |

| | |

| |3 will be assessed by the accuracy of the students’ definitions about the different bodies of water|

| |and landforms. A week later the students should be shown pictures of the different items and asked|

| |to tell the teacher what each is. If they have learned the material they should be able to |

| |identify it a week later. |
