Atomic Theory Poster Project - Ms. Hall // 8-12 Science

Atomic Theory Poster TimelineProject overviewEach group of two students (or one if you would prefer to work by yourself) will be assigned a scientist that has contributed to the Modern Atomic Theory. Students will research how the scientist contributed to the modern atomic theory. Each pair of students will construct one poster using information from books, printed material, or Internet sites. A list of resources can be found at hallscience., but feel free to find your own. Students will be responsible for taking notes on all class projects thru a gallery walk. All posters will be used to construct a time line of the development of the Modern Atomic Theory. Keep in mind, many people have contributed to the atomic theory. We are going to focus on six people and their models: Democritus – Atomos John Dalton – “Billiard Ball” modelJ.J. Thomson – “Plum Pudding” modelErnest Rutherford – Nuclear modelNiels Bohr – Bohr modelErwin Schr?dinger – Electron cloud model (or quantum mechanical model)You will sign up for one of these scientists & create a poster to put in a class timeline. Here’s a minimum of what you need to have included on the poster:Title (name of scientist & his model)Year (approximate) of when the scientist contributed to atomic theoryExplanation of what the scientist contributed to atomic theoryDiagram of model scientist proposedClear explanation of diagram (A couple sentences, labels, a legend, make it clear)Brief description (3-4 sentences) of experiment that led to this discoveryHere’s what will make your poster outstanding:ColorExplanations are clear and make senseThere are pictures of the scientist or experiment or anything else related to itA FUN FACT is included! FUN FACT: Ms. Hall loves fun facts! This is due 30 minutes into the next class. We’ll make a timeline and you will answer questions in a gallery walk about the other scientists. Finally, you will be given a quiz over what you learned… Possibly you can use your gallery walk notes on the quiz. I will think about it.Student Name_____________________Scientist _________________Grading Rubric for the Atomic Theory Poster Project CriteriaPossible PointsPoints EarnedTitle 5Year scientist contributed to atomic theory5Scientist’s contribution to atomic theory10Diagram of atomic model proposed by scientist20Accurate & clear description of diagram10Description of experiment20At least 1 picture included5Accurate information15Neat & Legible5Wall worthy (stands out & looks appealing)5Total 100Points added for relevant Fun Fact! _______Points deducted for lack of participation _______Total Score for the Atomic Theory Poster Project ______ ................
