NarcoPouch? Safety & Procedure Tips

NOTE: Field tests are designed to confirm probable cause. DO NOT use field tests as the sole element of your probable cause. Whenever you have results that are questionable, always err on the side of an inconclusive reading and forward your suspected material to the Crime Lab for verification. Due to the variations in quality and quantity of substances, be aware that the colors you obtain are designed to only match the family of colors described on the front of the test pouch. Be certain to agitate the pouch thoroughly after breakage of each ampoule. DO NOT keep the field tests as part of your evidence package, due to the short amount of time that colors remain and the inability to show multiple ampoule test results (Cocaine HCl and Crack Test). Always dispose of the field tests following your presumptive test. Take good notes showing the resultant color reactions in each ampoule. As a safety precaution, always use disposable gloves and wash your hands thoroughly following the completion of your field test.

Substance amounts with the symbols

represent the relative amount of substance sample required to perform a test.

ODV - NarcoPouch? Data Sheet

#923 Methamphetamine/MDMA (Ecstasy) Reagent This test is extremely sensitive and requires a very small amount of either Meth or Ecstasy in order to color react. The equivalent amount of 6-10 grains of powder is sufficient to identify the secondary amine structure of these substances. Overloading the field test WILL NOT intensify the color and will only reduce your amount of evidence. Very low threshold.

#908 Duquenois-Levine Reagent ? Marijuana The Duquenois-Levine Reagent presumptively identifies the substance THC, found in Marijuana. This test will require the equivalent amount of three strands of tobacco to color react properly. Placing more substance in the test will only deepen the color reactions on the 2nd and 3rd ampoules and make the color interpretation difficult to determine. Very low threshold.

#924 Mecke's Modified Reagent ? All Heroin (White, Brown, Black Tar) The threshold for the Mecke's test is very low. For White Heroin, approximately 20 grains of white powder. Brown Heroin will require 6-10 grains of powder and Black Tar Heroin will require an equivalent to the period at the end of a sentence.

#902 Marquis Reagent ? General Screening The nature of a general screening test like the Marquis Reagent suggests that it WILL NOT be as sensitive to the threshold effect as the specific tests of Meth/MDMA and Mecke's. Consequently, the threshold tends to be moderate requiring almost twice the substance to color react for Methamphetamine, Ecstasy or any of the Heroin's.

Oxycontin Update The manufacturer of Oxycontin (Perdue Pharma LP) has taken the 160 mg. dosage of Oxycontin off the market. You may still see some, but these will quickly disappear in the near future. Perdue Pharma has also started an aggressive policy of assisting law enforcement in prosecuting cases involving Oxycontin. To support your efforts, if you simply call their offices, they will forward to your agency a quantity of fake Oxycontin which looks exactly like the standard 10, 20, 40 or 80 mg. tablets. These are forwarded at no charge to assist in sting operations.

Helpful Web Sites The following web sites have been singled out as extremely useful: - We maintain a web site, with all past newsletters available at no charge, along with helpful information on the field tests themselves. - The single best general drug site on the web. This will show all controlled substances, images of them, schedules, dosages and experiences. - Specializing in Club Drugs and specifically on Ecstasy. An excellent tablet report showing the various tablets, where they are found in the country, their chemical makeup and ratings by users. - General site containing recipes and chat rooms. The site is somewhat difficult to maneuver but worth the time.

Technical Assistance ODV is pleased to offer technical support for your field testing questions. New Test for Psilocybin

A new test has been introduced in 2005 specifically for Psilocybin Mushrooms. Available as 929 in NarcoPouch or 7629 in Narcotest, this new test turns purple in the presence of the mushroom. It is recommended to use about a ? inch piece of the cap, since the stem does not work very well in the test. The color may form on the pieces of mushroom or the solution itself may turn purple after breaking the second ampoule. When you encounter fresh mushrooms a visual exam can verify Psilocybin. Cut the fresh mushroom stem in half - turn the fleshy middle toward you - if the mushroom is Psilocybin a blue/violet stripping appears. Dried Mushroom: Cut the mushroom cap in half - place the cut half over a white piece of paper and tap the dried mushroom - if psilocybin is present, dried purple spores will fall onto the piece of paper

Understanding Thresholds in Test Kits

All field tests work by following the principal of threshold amounts. In order to obtain a color reaction, you must introduce enough substance into the test to allow the reaction to occur. Depending on the test itself, this threshold can vary considerably. The following is meant to explain threshold (amount of substance required): the less material required to color react the lower the threshold; the more substance required the higher the threshold.

#904B ? Cocaine HCl and Base Reagent (Powder Cocaine and Crack) This test maintains the highest threshold of any of the popular tests. To understand the amount of material required to activate the Cocaine test, relate to a child's teeter-totter. As you introduce Cocaine into the pouch, you gradually tilt the teeter-totter toward the ground. When it reaches a horizontal position, you will have a solid pink solution with NO BLUE PRESENCE. Even though there is Cocaine present in the test, the test is unable to identify the Cocaine since the level is not high enough yet.

As the level passes horizontal and is between 51% and 65%, you will start to see a small blue solution in the corner of the pouch. If you were to introduce an amount equivalent to 66% to 75%, you will see more BLUE PRESENCE in the form of a blue line along the bottom of the pouch or some blue solution mixed with the pink solution. However, if you reach the optimum level of 75% to 100% you will develop a blue solution throughout the liquid. Ideally, this is what you want to strive to achieve.

Further understand, if you were to introduce more than 100% of the threshold into the test, you will not improve the results of the test, but may start to distort the results after breaking the 3rd ampoule. On the 3rd ampoule, you should see pink over blue. If too much substance was added, the pink solution may appear a bluish pink color. That indicates that you are using too much substance. Lastly, once you have introduced a sufficient amount to make the "teeter-totter" reach the ground level, introducing more substance will not improve the test. All you are doing at this point is wasting evidence.
