English 7 - Biographical Narrative ProjectOver the last few class periods, you have researched the life of a well-known individual who has faced either a physical or emotional challenge in his or her life. This challenge may have been present from infancy or early childhood (i.e. autism, cerebral palsy, stuttering) or became apparent later in life (after a catastrophic event or accident). Whatever the challenge, this individual has achieved in his or her chosen field. Now you are going to create a narrative essay about your chosen individual. This narrative essay will serve as the script for your visual presentation created through iMovie or other movie making software.Your biographical essay should have the following characteristics:A real-life subjectA thesis statement that states a specific idea about that person’s life and achievements A description of the subject’s key character traitsPhase 1: Pre-WritingGather Information – You can continue to gather information on your individual and some general information on the challenge your individual faces/faced. As you take notes, make sure that you are keeping track of your sources (NO WIKIPEDIA!)Draw Conclusions – Based on your research, make some inferences about your individual’s personality. What traits does/did your person possess? What is the connection between these traits and his or her achievements?Write a Thesis Statement – Use your conclusions from Step 2 to create a sentence or two that makes a statement about your individual overcoming adversity to achieve great things in life.Phase 2: DraftingDecide how to Organize – Choose to either organize chronologically (time order) or focus on a few important events in his or her life, building up to the most important.Write an Introduction – Your intro should begin with an interesting hook, include a transition sentence or two that then leads the reader to your final sentence of the paragraph – the thesis statement.Body Paragraphs – The number of paragraphs is up to you, however be sure to use solid topic sentences for each. Try to use very specific details to support your ideas.Tone – Rather than writing a biographical “report,” consider the fact that you are writing a narrative. This means that you are writing a story – use vivid language and details to make your story appealing to the reader. Conclusion – Your final paragraph should restate your main ideas, and then tell the reader how this individual has helped to raise awareness of his or her challenge or has changed the way people view others with this same challenge.Phase 3: Bibliography – You must have a works cited page. If you choose to quote your sources, you must use in-text citations. We will review how these are done.Phase 4: Visual Piece – More info on that to come at a later time. The written portion of your project is due prior to the holiday break – either December 18 or December 19, depending on when you have class. The second portion – the visual piece will be completed sometime within the two weeks we come back in January. More on that part later! ................
