The format of the course is such that students explore the current research on a number of different topics related to psychological growth and development and for each topic also engage in experiential application through the use of various exercises done out of class. Taken together, these facets facilitate both intellectual and experiential learning of the concepts discussed.

It also explores the role that relationships play in the development and remediation of psychopathology.

• Description: This doctoral and masters level course provides an overview of theoretical concepts and practical issues related to group counseling. The course covers counselor issues, client selection criteria, client and group preparation, group structuring, group processes, evidence-based group practice, multicultural competence, and basic therapeutic techniques. Students acquire basic skills in leading group counseling sessions and dealing with difficult situations through experiential exercises. The purpose is to introduce students to concepts of group dynamics and development as well as the practical aspects of leading a group.

Advanced Practicum I in Counseling Psychology

• Description: This doctoral level course is the first practicum experience of the doctoral program in which students see clients in the BYU Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) for personal counseling. Students apply counseling skills acquired in previous lab experiences and practicum classes. Emphasis is placed on counseling, supervisory and peer feedback, discussions of video-recorded sessions, formal case presentations, and discussions of counseling issues. Supervision is provided by a faculty member of CAPS and the practicum instructor.
