The National Kite Month Committee will file the requests with the Governors of each state and a copy will be available for your use. Below you will find a sample letter of introduction and a sample Proclamation that you can use to submit your request to your local administrator. The Proclamation requests may be submitted by filing a form on the local website, by email or in person depending on the local requirements. You might consider including a flyers for your event and an invitation to your administrator inviting them to take part in your activity. The American Kitefliers Association &

Kite Trade Association International Present:

National Kite Month

The National Kite Month, (NKM) Celebration began in 1999 as a joint effort between the American Kitefliers Association (AKA) and the Kite Trade Association International (KTAI). The focus of the celebration is to encourage kite events worldwide stressing safety and wholesome family fun. The events can range from a kite display in local schools and libraries to kiting activities such as kitemaking workshops and flying demonstrations including organizing local festivals.

Kites have evolved from the days of sticks and newspaper to take advantage of modern materials. They can be lightweight controllable designs that are flown indoors with no wind to traction kites that can propel you on land and water. Modern designs can also be found with elaborate artwork or realistic representations of creatures that

we are familiar with. Kites can range in size from smaller than a postage stamp to hundreds of square feet.

We would like to ask you to join us in building on the success of the past 14 years by supporting our efforts to publicizing April as National Kite Month. Why April? Because it’s spring, there’s wind, many National Kite events are already held in the month of April and because it works well with the spring school schedule.

The 2013 celebration includes five full weekends of kiting events from March 31st to May 5th.

To the (Citizens or Residents) of (______________)

Whereas kite flying is family friendly, nonpolluting, healthy, educational, outdoor oriented, and fun,

Whereas kite flying and kite fliers, from Benjamin Franklin to Charlie Brown, are a constructive and quintessential part of our own American culture,

Whereas the American Kitefliers Association and the Kite Trade Association International have designated April to be National Kite Month, and are promoting kite festivals and kite workshops across the entire country,

Whereas the ( _____Event___________) will be held on ( Date ) at (______Location),

( delete the line above if you have no event scheduled)

Be it hereby resolved that (_____City _____) officially designate April to be (___City___) Kite Month,

Be it further resolved that ( ___City_____) encourages everyone to participate in the joy and excitement of kite flying and urges all citizens to Go Fly a Kite!
