Summary of Professional Characteristics

Preparation for teaching, research, and administrative roles in public school or higher education includes four years of administrative experience in public schools, eleven years of full-time secondary science teaching experience, 14 years in higher education, and more than fifteen years of community service/consultant experience. The latter includes leadership in planning and implementing community health programs, school curricula, teacher staff development activities, adopt-a-school programs, and parent/community education programs designed to enhance the education and health promotion programs in public schools, and promote community health. Research has focused on explicating factors that mediate and moderate health behaviors of African American women and their families. The research has contributed to the growing body of knowledge on how to design culturally sensitive interventions for health promotion endeavors in minority and/or medically underserved communities. Funded research, education, and service projects include the use of community-based participatory research (CBPR) methods to develop and implement (1) a statewide comprehensive community needs assessment process for HIV care service providers (2) a community-based breast health care & evaluation study, (3) peer-led support groups for African American women living with HIV, and (4) social-support networks for improving health outcomes among Black women and their families.
