[pic]#1 GOVERNMENT OF CANADA LAUNCHES CANADA’S NEW TOURISM VISION

From the office of Larry Bagnell, MP Yukon

During the week of May 7, the Honourable Bardish Chagger, Minister of Small Business and Tourism, announced Canada’s New Tourism Vision. The New Tourism Vision will use a whole-of-government plan that will attract more international visitors to Canada, and create the good jobs and economic development opportunities that tourism brings to the North.

The strategy consists of 20 Action Items, organized under 3 Pillars: Marketing, Access, and Product.

“One of the key national action items, that will benefit our Territory, is the development of a Strategic Plan for the Chinese Market,” said Larry Bagnell. “China is a growing market for the Yukon and across Canada, and our government is committed to doubling the number of visits from Chinese guests to Canada by 2021. We have seen larger numbers of tourist from China in the past few years coming to the Yukon for a northern lights experience; this strategy will help augment that growth. ”

Along with helping growing Chinese visitation, travel visa requirements for Mexican nationals have been lifted –one of the highest growth source markets for Canada.

Another one of the pieces to the strategy that will have a positive impact on the Yukon will be growing Indigenous tourism.

“Indigenous tourism generated $1.4 billion in GDP in 2015 nationally, and Yukon is no exception to this trend,” said Mr. Bagnell. “We have seen in the last decade the growth in cultural centres and festivals such as the Adäka Cultural Festival. I am very proud that Budget 2017 is providing $8.6 million to support the continuing development of Canada's unique and authentic Indigenous tourism industry.”

Canada’s New Tourism Vision will also help Yukon’s tourism operators by strengthening Canada's tourism data and metrics. This will be done by enhancing the International Travel Survey Program, which will produce better data at more detailed geographic levels. The Tourism Satellite Account will also be expanded to include data at the territorial and provincial level.

“On Minister Chagger's recent visit to the Yukon she met with a number of tourism stakeholders and was exposed to just how important tourism is to our local economy, " said Mr. Bagnell.

#6 CITY PLANS FOR DOWNTOWN WHITEHORSE

City of Whitehorse Surveys

The City of Whitehorse is currently undertaking new plans for the Downtown and Marwell areas. The plans will chart the specific actions and steps needed to ensure these two areas remain vibrant and economically successful. As part of this process, the City is hoping that businesses located in Downtown or Marwell can fill out a quick survey. The results are very important as they will inform the planning team as they start preparing the plans. Specifically, we are looking for input on current challenges and issues facing businesses and ideas for improvements. The survey can be found here:

The survey is designed to be short and should take no more than 5-10 minutes. We are asking that businesses fill out the survey by Tuesday May 23 in order to inform the planning team in advance of the next major public event which is occurring on June 7-8 titled the Downtown and Marwell Plan-a-Thon. More information on the Plan-a-Thon and overall process can be found here:whitehorse.ca/downtown and whitehorse.ca/marwell.

Thanks and if you have any questions please contact Ben Campbell, City of Whitehorse Planner, at ben.campbell@whitehorse.ca or 668-8338.
