About the Cherokee National Holiday

Celebrated yearly since 1953, the Cherokee National Holiday commemorates the original signing of the 1839 Cherokee Constitution. With an exciting selection of entertainment, cultural and athletic events, it has grown into one of the largest annual festivals in Oklahoma, attracting over 100,000 visitors from around the world. This annual event is a celebration of spiritual, mental, and physical well-being. It is a focal point emphasizing Cherokee heritage, cultural awareness, and the reunification of our families. Thousands of Cherokee and other attendees from across the United States and abroad will make the pilgrimage to the historic Cherokee Nation capital in Tahlequah this September to renew friendships and celebrate the Cherokee spirit. This celebration is jam-packed with sports activities for all ages, from traditional games such as Cherokee stickball and marbles, the cornstalk shoot and blowgun competitions to more cross-cultural events such as powwow dancing, golf and softball tournaments. Hundreds of vendor booths offer visitors the opportunity to view and purchase authentic Native American hand-made arts, crafts, and foods. Music lovers can pick and choose from gospel and bluegrass music, a toe-tapping fiddler's competition and even music from the internationally acclaimed, award-winning Cherokee National Youth Choir. History buffs will enjoy the many great museums in the area, including the Cherokee National History Museum, Supreme Court Museum, and Prison Museum. History is made each year as the Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation delivers the State of the Nation address to the Cherokee people on the lawn of the Cherokee Nation Peace Pavilion. Those with children will especially enjoy the annual parade downtown, storytelling, children's games and fun hands-on traditional craft making events. The Intertribal Powwow held on the Cherokee Nation Cultural Grounds is always a crowd favorite and takes the celebration late into the night as dancers from across the United States compete for top prizes and honors. The Cherokee National Holiday is a festive time in Tahlequah, a time for family and friends. It is sure to be an occasion you will want to experience every Labor Day weekend.

Event Plan

Last year, the Cherokee National Holiday was safely held virtually. The online celebration, which featured 35 produced content segments, attracted more than 160,000 virtual attendees and by all metrics was a major success. After analyzing the feedback received from around the world, we realized there is unprecedented demand for virtual components to remain part of all future events. Going forward, at-large citizens and those interested in learning about Cherokee culture and heritage will be able to join the celebration from anywhere with an internet connection. For the first time, the 70th Cherokee National Holiday will introduce an array of in-person and complimentary virtual features. This will include professionally produced content, live video streams and more ways to for attendees to connect online ? in conjunction with over 50 bigger-than-ever in-person festivities. This new `hybrid' format opens up the festivities to a brand new online segment of attendees. It is also a very valuable addition for our sponsors, as it will further increase your brand exposure and generate even more leads. Our aim for this event, as it always has been, is to create an all-inclusive family fun experience. The theme of this year's event is "Forging a Legacy: Seven Decades of Cherokee Fellowship." Early events begin on August 19 with the Little Cherokee Ambassadors Competition. Main events will start on September 1 and conclude on September 4. Thank you for your consideration in sponsoring the 70th Cherokee National Holiday. Please see the next steps to finalize your sponsorship on the following page.
