NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY SELECTION CRITERIA

The NHS Council establishes the national standards for all NHS chapters. Local chapters create their own by-laws which are to be consistent with and comply with the NHS National Constitution. Membership in the National Honor Society is one of the highest honors that can be awarded to a high school student. NHS has worked to bring the accomplishments of outstanding students to the attention of parents, teachers, peers and the community. The guidelines for membership are based upon a student’s outstanding performance in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. The four criteria for selection form the foundation upon which the organization and its activities are built. The following list of criteria is not comprehensive; please refer to the NASSP National Honor Society Handbook (available online) to read all the selection criteria.

Prerequisite Conditions for Selection

1. Any student in the school with both an official charter of the NHS and an affiliation with the NASSP Department of Student Activities is eligible for consideration for membership in the NHS. All membership selection is handled through the local school chapter.

2. Membership is restricted to current juniors and seniors; there will be no quota or percentage of members per class.

3. Students need to have a cumulative unweighted grade point average of 3.5 to be considered.

Criteria for Selection

1. Unweighted GPA of 3.5 or higher to be considered

2. Evaluation of candidate’s performance in the areas of: Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service

All eligible candidates will be given the opportunity to apply for membership, but eligibility does not guarantee acceptance. It is your responsibility to be aware of the deadlines that are listed in this application packet. Students who do not turn in their application packets by the deadline will not be eligible to join NHS for the current year. Juniors who do not meet the requirements are eligible to apply again next year as long as they maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.5, unweighted.

Scoring of the Application

The selection criteria for NHS will be based on a point system that evaluates the applicant’s performance according to the four criteria: scholarship, character, leadership, and service. The faculty committee will examine the applications. Committee members will individually score them using a point system where each activity listed can potentially earn one point. The complete, uploaded, well-constructed essay has the potential to earn two points and is a required part of the application. Students who do not submit an essay will not be considered for membership this year. Juniors must earn 20 points, and seniors must earn 24 points to qualify for membership.

Scholarship:

Students who have an unweighted cumulative grade point average of 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) or higher, set by the local school’s faculty council, meet the scholarship requirement for membership. These students are then eligible for consideration on the basis of service, leadership, and character (NHS Constitution, Article IX, section 2).

Service:

This quality is defined through the voluntary contributions made by student to the school or community, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit.

Leadership:

Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, promoters of school activities, idea-contributors, dependable, and those who exemplify positive attitudes about life. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activity while working with or for others. Candidates’ leadership position must be a role in which they are responsible for others. A leadership position is required by the national guidelines to be considered for membership.

Character:

The student of good character upholds principles of morality and ethics, is cooperative, demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability, shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others, and generally maintains a good and clean lifestyle. Work experience is also considered indicative of good character.

Faculty Committee

The NHS Faculty Council consists of five members who are appointed by the Principal each year. The process is as follows:

1. They review the selection procedure for NHS.

2. They anonymously review and evaluate the Student Activity form and the student essay.

3. They review all of the above along with the student’s disciplinary record and make the final selections.

* The NHS advisors are not committee members. The role of the advisors is to maintain the organization and manage the members with the assistance of the NHS student officers.

*Although the NHS advisors do not evaluate the applications, students are welcome to ask advisors questions about the application, process, and requirements.

Essay Question: Please print a copy of your essay and staple it to the back of your application. Your essay must also be uploaded to by 11:59 pm on Tuesday, September 25. All applicants must submit an essay to be considered for membership.

Please write 200 words in response to the following prompt: Service is a key component of National Honor Society.

➢ How has your involvement in serving your community impacted you personally?
