NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY - Barrington High School

National Honor Society

Nomination Form For Membership

SPRING 2015 Inductees

Congratulations! You have qualified scholastically for membership in the National Honor Society with a cumulative GPA of 3.7 or above.[1] Yet, scholarship is just the first step. You must also qualify in terms of your leadership, service, and character. Read through this nomination form carefully to reflect on what will be required for a favorable recommendation from the faculty committee.

I. Application Essay

The four pillars of the National Honor Society are service, leadership, character, and achievement. Your essay should answer the following questions:

Describe how your personality and life experiences exemplify the four pillars of NHS.

Please do not simply define what the four pillars mean, but how these pillars are a reflection of who you are as a student at Barrington High School.

II. Letters of Recommendation

SUBMIT YOUR REQUESTS TO THE APPROPRIATE PERSONS IMMEDIATELY. Letters should be returned DIRECTLY to Mrs. Turngren in C-240 from teachers/coaches/sponsors/volunteer coordinators by the application deadline. Letters can be emailed, mailed, or dropped off in Mrs. Turngren's high school mailbox. DO NOT enclose them with your application materials.

A. Teacher Recommendations - Achievement and Character

Request letters of recommendation from two of your academic teachers from your junior and/or senior year. Politely request that they be as specific as possible in testifying to your demonstration of achievement and character in the classroom. We also recommend that you send thank-you notes to your teachers just as you would for college and scholarship applications. The request forms for these letter are attached to this packet.

B. Sponsor/Coach - Character and Leadership

Request a letter of recommendation from one of your coaches or sponsors from your junior or senior year. Politely request that they be as specific as possible in testifying to your demonstration of leadership and character outside of the classroom. We are not interested in titles such as captain, president, etc. We want to read evidence of your capacity to set the pace, to find the tone, and provide the tenacity for a task. We also recommend that you send thank-you notes to your coaches or sponsors just as you would for college and scholarship applications. The request form for this letter is attached to this packet.

C. Volunteer Coordinator - Leadership and Service

You must have completed thirty hours of community service throughout high school to merit consideration. A service project is any specific activity in which you have served the interests or needs of others. Do not designate as a volunteer project an activity that principally serves your own enrichment. For the guidelines on valid volunteer service hours, please visit the NHS website as well as the district volunteer website.

Request a letter of someone who has overseen your involvement in a volunteer service project of one kind or another. The request form for this letter is attached to this packet.

BY May 8th , 2015:
