The Community

The Lakeview Local School District is a suburban residential community; it encompasses more than twenty-five square miles and serves the city of Cortland and Bazetta Township, located in Trumbull County, Ohio which is in the northeast area of the state. Lakeview Local School District is in transition; our demographics are changing, and we are experiencing a shrinking economic base. Seventeen percent of students at the high school, twenty-four percent at the middle school, and thirty percent at the elementary school are on free/reduced lunch. This is a significant increase over the past few years. District facilities include Lakeview High School (grades 8-12), Lakeview Middle School (grades 4-7), and Lakeview Elementary (grades K-3) athletic fields (baseball, soccer, football), two running tracks (one of which is all weather), a maintenance garage, a transportation garage, and an outdoor land laboratory.

The School

Lakeview High School has earned an EXCELLENT rating by the Ohio Department of Education for meeting 15 of 15 performance indicators and earning a performance index of 106.2. Our graduation rate was 99%, while the state average was 83%. Our attendance rate was 95%.

Lakeview High School is a comprehensive high school enrolling approximately 774 students in grades eight through twelve. The high school opened in the fall of 1961 and an addition was added to the south end of the building in 1971. The 1995 additions and renovations include a media/technology complex, auditorium, art complex, and student parking lot. Lakeview High School is accredited by the State of Ohio Department of Education.

The Curriculum

Lakeview’s academic programs are organized on a semester schedule. Students are required to take six periods out of a seven-period day each semester. Some exceptional students carry a maximum load of 7 periods per day. The school day is divided into seven 45-minute periods and one 30-minute lunch period. Students meet with their classes on a daily basis.

A minimum of 21 credits is required for graduation. 1/2 credit = 1 semester; 1 credit = I year. Graduation requirements include: 4 credits (4 years) English; 3 credits (3 years) mathematics; 3 credits (3 years) science; 4 credits (4 years) social studies; 1/2 credit (1 semester) speech; 1/2 credit (1 semester) health; 1/2 credit (2 semesters) physical education; 1 credit (1 year) of either fine arts, or foreign language, or business/computer technology; and 4.5 credits of electives. In order to graduate, students must pass all five sections of the Ohio Graduation Test, which is given to students in March of their sophomore year.

Beginning with the Class of 2014, there will be new Ohio Core Curriculum graduation requirements, some of which include four credits of math including Algebra 2, a financial literacy requirement, and science credits to include Biology and advanced sciences.

Students may choose to take either the college preparatory curriculum or the career-technical curriculum (at the Trumbull Career and Technical Center). Some students who qualify may also take courses at either Kent State University Trumbull Campus or Youngstown State University for high school and college credit. Honors Courses are offered in the subject areas of English (Grades 9 and 10), Anatomy and Physiology, Physics, and Calculus. The Honors Physics and Honors Calculus courses are recently aligned with Youngstown State University’s dual credit program; students taking the college course’s final exam will earn both college and high school credit for those courses. Advanced Placement (AP) Courses are offered in English Language and English Literature. AP is a criterion-based enrollment program, all AP students are required to take the AP Exams. In 2011-12, 40 students took 44 AP exams; 85% of our AP students received scores of 3, 4, or 5.

Testing Results 2011-2012

Ohio Graduation Test: 89% of our 10th graders passed all five sections of the Ohio Graduation Test. 96% passed Reading, 97% passed Mathematics, 99% passed Writing, 93% passed Science, and 93% passed Social Studies.

ACT: In 2012, 123 of our students participated in the ACT; our average composite ACT score was 23.0, while the state of Ohio composite average was 21.8.

PSAT National Merit: The Class of 2012 had one National Merit Commended Scholar.

Grading and Ranking

We have a building-wide grading scale.A = 93—100; B = 83—92; C = 73—82; D = 63—72; F = 0—62. Grades are then posted on the report cards as letter grades. Lakeview High School assigns letter grades using a numeric averaging system.

Each nine weeks, grades are issued to students in every class on their report cards.

Quality points are determind by the following scale:

A = 4 points in a 1.00 credit class.

B = 3 points in a 1.00 credit class.

C = 2 points in a 1.00 credit class.

D = 1 points in a 1.00 credit class.

F = 0 points in a 1.00 credit class.

In a half-credit class, a student would receive half as many quality points.

Advanced Placement and Honors courses are NOT weighted.

Class rank is calculated by adding up the total number of quality points that a student has earned and then dividing by the total number of credits attempted—this produces a GPA. PLEASE NOTE: Students who have an identical GPA have an identical class rank. For example, if we have 5 students ranked at number 1, the student with the next lowest GPA would be ranked 6th. Class Valedictorian and Salutatorian are designated at the end of the school year based on the 8th semester cumulative GPA. Valedictorians MUST MAINTAIN a 4.0 GPA for the final cumulative GPA.

All credit classes are included in computing grade point average and class rank. Grades are recorded on the transcript, and class rank and grade point average are computed after the 1st semester and then again at the end of the school year.

College Attendance History and Scholarship Awards

148 students graduated in the Class of 2012. 143 students continued their education after high school. Of those students, 116 indicated pursuing a Bachelor’s degree, 15 indicated an Associate’s degree or certificate/diploma program, and 5 went on to military service. The Class of 2012 was awarded over $2.15 million in scholarships, $32,000 were given from local scholarship donors. These figures only include scholarship monies that were accepted, and do not include any awards based on financial need. Students have attended schools such as: Washington University in St. Louis, The College of Wooster, US Naval Academy, Cornell University, Ohio Northern University, the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, and NEOUCOM, among other quality public, private, career, and technical schools.

Athletic Programs

Lakeview High School is a White Tier member of the newly formed All American Conference (formerly the TAC-8). Lakeview has won several TAC-8 Championships in the past several years, including Boys Soccer, Boys Basketball, and Girls Track and Field. Lakeview High School has sent scholarship athletes on to swimming, football, softball, cross-country, and track teams. Many of our recent graduates have earned athletic scholarships in swimming, women’s golf, boys and girls soccer, babseball, and basketball. One of our recent graduates is now a professional women’s golfer.

Fine Arts Programs

Lakeview High School also has award-winning instrumental and vocal music programs. Both our Choir and Band have won several Superior ratings at the Ohio Music Educators’ Association District, Regional, and State Music Contests. Our Marching Band has been featured at Youngstown State University and has performed in Chicago and Disney World. Lakeview has also produced many music majors, band, and choir teachers over the years. In August 2011, one of our recent grads will be a technical theater assistant at Julliard. Our Drama Club has also worked on several musicals and plays, each performance entertaining parents and community members alike.

Our Staff and Students

Our staff is committed to excellence, as they work to prepare our students to achieve their future educational and career goals. 73% of our staff has a Master’s degree and 100% of our courses are taught by teachers who are certified in the subject area. Our students are encouraged to strive for excellence every day: in the classroom, on the athletic fields, and in the community. As our students work to begin their future, they leave Lakeview ready to face the 21st century economy.
