Report on the Observance of International Ozone Day, 2009

The International Ozone Day 2009 and Celebration of 22th Anniversary of the signing of the Montreal Protocol was observed throughout Bangladesh on 16 September 2009. Observance of the Day had been as elsewhere in the world with renewed expression of solidarity with the international community to create awareness on the adverse impacts of the Ozone Layer Depletion.

The Department of Environment, Ministry of Environment and Forest, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh undertook various programmes on that Day including brought out special supplements in four National Dailies in which messages of the Hon'ble President, the Hon'ble Prime Minister, the Hon'ble Minister of State responsible for Environment and Forests, Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forests were published. The special supplements in the Daily news paper also contained articles of Director General of the Department of Environment on the theme, " Universal Participation : Ozone protection unifies the world”

The Bangladesh Betar (Radio) and Bangladesh Television had broadcast the messages of the Hon'ble President and the Hon'ble Prime Minister of the Government of Bangladesh. A discussion was held on 16 September 2009 in Bangladesh Television participated by the Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forests; Director General, Department of Environment and Senior Officer, Ozone Cell, Department of Environment. The discussion was conducted by Dr. S. M Murshed of Bangladesh Television. Other Satellite Channel also organized special discussion and broadcast various TV footage on this issue.

A painting competition was organized among the children on 9th September 2009. About 600 (six hundred) children belonging to various age groups between 3 and 16 years had participated in the competition. A nation-wide essay competition was also organized among the students from Schools to Universities on the eve of International Ozone Day on various topics.

Hon’ble President of Bangladesh Mr. Zillur Rahaman in his message said that Chemicals and materials created by humans are contributing ozone layer depletion posing threat to be environment and ecology of the earth. He urged to phase-out ozone depleting substances in order to save the environment and ecology of the world.

Hon’ble Prime Minister, Government of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina in his statement called the Montreal Protocol as an "unique example of world cooperation for the conservation of environment" and appreciated that the treaty continued to play an important role in protecting the ozone layer. "Bangladesh is firmly determined to implement the treaty", the Prime Minister said in his message on the eve of International Ozone Day.

The State Minister responsible for Ministry of Environment and Forests, Dr. Hasan Mahmud in his message expressed his concern on increase of global warming. He urged all concerns to avoid emission of GHG as far as possible. "Most of the ODSs are GHG", he added.

A seminar was organized marking the day by the Department of Environment on 16 September, 2009 at the conference hall of the LEGD, Dhaka marking the day.
