Future plans and hopes for:

1884 (or earlier)--1904 Farm Home

c.1880’s Log cabin

and 1914 (or earlier) Early Museum Curio cabin.

1) Secure the National Historical Registry structures with security and fire alarms.

DONE: Thanks to funds raised from July 2004 Benefit Auction. There was also enough left to apply for a matching grant for the:

2) Roof replacement of Historical Farm home.

(DONE- Thanks to Idaho Heritage Trust and Hank Lorang and Darrin Homchick of Sterling Roofing, John Lorang of Lorang Custom Builders, wife Andrea and son Adam, Judy Litchfield, Roz Larson and son Jason, Janet Lorang, Tom and Mae Jones, Pat and Clark Armstrong, Roch, Helen and Lance Lorang, Pat Holbrook of Pabco Premier Roofing Supplies, Troy Sanders and Troy Lee and Washington Cedar and Supply)

3) Carefully removing deteriorated portions of the two-tier balcony.

Porch roof has been stabilized with beams, by professional home restorer John Lorang of Lorang Custom Builders,

in accordance with advice from architectural historian Fred Walters of Idaho Heritage Trust. Kurt Zenner, professional architect of Portland, Oregon and author of 1986 architectural paper, “The Legacy of John Lorang” is also available for advice. (2005 Grant also received from Idaho Heritage Trust for portion of balcony restoration)

4) Roof replacement of Early Museum Curio Cabin roof. (2005 Grant just received from Idaho Heritage Trust for assistance with roof supplies)

5) Tarps to weather in the structures during renovation. (DONE)

6) Prime and paint the exterior to it’s original color scheme. (2005 matching Grant just received from Idaho Heritage Trust for assistance with paint supplies. Numerous photos are available for trim paint references.)

7) Reset Curio cabin windows with glazing supplies. (2005 matching Grant just received from Idaho Heritage Trust for assistance with glazing supplies)

8) Continued preservation of artifacts and photos. (already started with help of Idaho Humanities Council, also the University of Idaho History Dept., (Professor William Ramsey and students, Professor Ken Faunce and students), U of Idaho Anthropology and Sociology Depts., (Professor Mark Warner and students, including Emily Dyer-Keating), notations from Dianne IverGlynne of Idaho Heritage Trust, a phone call with Terry Abraham of University of Idaho Special Collections......(full list of students available at the Ranch museum.)

also Ramona Lee and Jeff, Judy Litchfield, Karen Lauby, Dale Lorang, Mary Ann Rohrbach, John Lorang and a very high quality scanner).

9) Evaluation of Forest area, which is also included in the National Historical Registry listing. (Forest evaluated by U of I Professor Ron Mahoney, director of Big Trees Idaho program, and Fred Johnson, author of Wild Trees of Idaho: Found---An Austrian Pine, near the tip of the forest, 23 feet taller than the largest tree in the program, but smaller in diameter. Also two Black Locusts near the barn are some of the biggest in Idaho.)

10) Rot repair and replacement of any necessary structural components. (Inspections so far of beams under farm home and in attic have found them to be remarkably sound, also the upper level flooring of home.)

11) Remove concrete and misc. soil as required around and under portions of the structures that are showing signs of rot and deterioration due to being sub-grade.

12) Shoring and leveling of the structures to accommodate foundation repairs and replacement of any necessary deteriorated structural components. Excavation as required for access.

13) Fieldstone foundation reconstruction as required.

14) Salvage, repair, and replace components related to the two-tier entry porch, stairs and balustrade.

15) Repair and restoration of exterior doors and windows of historical farm home and log cabin. (Patrick Lorang has replaced glass in 3 kitchen windows of the 1890 addition)

16) Utilities repair and restoration for electrical, plumbing, heating, and ventilation and related fixtures.

17) Repair or reproduction of exterior original homestead porch to bring it back to form, circa 1884.

18) Reconstruction of the bathroom in previous location and with original fixtures.

19) Restoring Mary Lorang’s sewing room. (This is also the room she used to write letters to son Henry when he was in France and England during WWI.)

20) Interior repair and restoration of millwork, doors, hardware and design, circa 1910.

21) Repair and finishes related to the plaster and wallpaper, flooring and ceilings.

22) Insulation for crawl and attic spaces.

23) Concrete work to replace exterior walkway, restore 1914 fountain, including the sculpture of the little boy and umbrella.

(Mold has been recreated from original statue, which was made of pot metal. Two copies in bronze have been made by professional bronze sculptor, Brad Lorang for auction purposes. Another bronze copy is planned for the 1914 fountain which was built by John Lorang and depicted in a photo of the home in the 1914 Latah County Atlas)

24) Restore landscape as possible over time. Investigate ways to save the Barn. (University of Idaho Landscape Architecture Dept. Professor Don Brigham and students Jessie Lassen and Chase have helped with providing two Landscape Designs to set off the Historical Registry area, the Farm Home, Log Cabin and Curio Cabin.)
