Native American Tribes and Regions Project

Name: Section: ________ Date: ___________

Native American Cultural Regions Project

Native Americans were the original survivors. Without any sort of modern technology, they found ways to entertain each other, find and cook food for their meals, create shelters, and make clothes. They did all of this by using their intelligence and by using hard work.

In the United States, there are different regions, each having its own special climate and geography. One Native American tribe living in one region would therefore have very different shelters, clothing, and food than a Native American tribe living in a different region. They needed to adapt to their environment in order to survive.

Your Task

Your task with your team is to travel back in time to learn how the Native Americans survived. You will be focusing particularly on how the environment influenced Native Americans’ daily life.

You and your team will be ASSIGNED to travel back to ONE specific region. While there, you will be asked to do the following:

• Observe the climate and environment of the region

• Record facts about the shelter, clothing, food, and culture (which could include music, art, and cultural beliefs) of the different Native Americans tribe who live in that region

Upon your return to the present day and location, you will need to report all of your findings to others.

****

Dear Research Team,

Please check the region to which you were ASSIGNED:

□ Eastern Woodlands

□ Great Plains

□ Southwest Desert

□ Northwest Coast

□ California-Intermountain

□ Arctic

While you are traveling back in time, here are some questions that might help with your research and might help strengthen your presentation:

• What is the climate like in this region?

• What major landforms are found in your region?

• How do landforms affect climate, transportation, and trade?

• What plant and animal life existed in your region?

• What natural resources did your tribe use for food, clothing, shelters, and medicine?

• Did the environment influence the region's art?

• How is the environment reflected in your region’s art?

• What were the religious beliefs, customs, and legends of the tribes in your region?

• Did the environment have any influence on religious beliefs and customs and legends?

I have also attached a sheet for you to help you organizer your thoughts! Good luck on your journey!
