Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary TimeOctober 22, 2017“Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God.”— Matthew 22:21POWER STRUGGLEPower struggles occur on every level of society, from the world stage to relationships at work, to our own homes. We struggle for position in the hierarchy of power: Who has power over whom? How do they wield it? What is the source of that power? What is the healthy response? In this Sunday’s Gospel reading the Pharisees engage Jesus in a power struggle over whether Jews should show tribute to Caesar by paying taxes. Jesus’ response puts this and every struggle for power into perspective. In harmony with the words of Isaiah and Paul, Jesus teaches us that God is the ultimate source of all power—the power of earthly rulers, the Pharisees, Jesus, the Church, and the power within ourselves.Question of the WeekHow am I already exercising faithful, responsible citizenship? Is it time for me to join or initiate a concrete outreach to identify and address specific needs in my community?SPECIAL OBSERVANCES WEEKLY READINGS AND MASS INTENTIONS10/21 Saturday: Blessed Virgin MaryReadings: Rom 4:13, 16-18; Ps 105:6-9, 42-43; Lk 12:8-12Mass Intentions: 5:00pm (M) +Bruce Bluder 5:00pm (AR) 7:00pm (AC) 10/22 Sunday: Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time; World Mission DayReadings: Is 45:1, 4-6; Ps 96:1, 3-5, 7-10; 1 Thes 1:1-5b; Mt 22:15-21Mass Intentions: 830am (M) +Paul Raggio 830am (C) Brady & Codi Westberg (SI) 10:00am (AR) +Bob Kearns 10:15am (AC) Parish10/23 Monday: St. John of CapistranoReadings: Rom 4:20-25; Lk 1:69-75; Lk 12:13-21Mass Intentions: 8:00am (AC) 10/24 Tues: St. Anthony Mary ClaretReadings: Rom 5:12, 15b, 17-19, 20b-21; Ps 40:7-10, 17; Lk 12:35-38Mass Intentions 8:00am (AC) +Hank Middleton10/25 Wednesday: Readings: Rom 6:12-18; Ps 124:1b-8; Lk 12:39-48 Mass Intention: 8:30am (M) Sara & Ro Lucero (SI)10/26 Thursday: Readings: Rom 6:19-23; Ps 1:1-4, 6; Lk 12:49-53 Mass Intentions 8:00am (AC) 10/27 Friday: Readings: Rom 7:18-25a; Ps 119:66, 68, 76-77, 93-94; Lk 12:54-59Mass Intentions: 8:00am (AC) 10/28 Saturday: Ss. It’s obvious that what we know of them leads us to have a very negative opinion of them. Jesus was also very critical about them and often in conflict with their religion. They often turn life-giving principles into religion that suffocated and condemned. Over time, the great principles of the Law were broken down into literally thousands of rules and regulations believeing that salvation was attained through scrupulous observance of those rules and regulations. Rules and regulations have their place, their importance. But to see religion as consisting only in rules and regulations holds two dangers. First, following the rules scrupulously can lead to presumption, to thinking we can earn God’s grace through our own efforts, that we save ourselves. Secondly, failing to follow the rules, while believing them to be our salvation, can lead to scrupulosity. The problem of the Pharisee was not so much about lack of faith, as a lack of humility, that would allow them to admit they could be wrong. They have lost the capacity of self-criticism. Lack of humility is often accompanied by stubbornness. The hypocrisy of the Pharisee affords us a good example in a negative way. We must be careful not to out-Pharisee the Pharisees that is, not to think of ourselves as incapable of making the same mistakes they did. We can learn from them never to think we understand so perfectly what God wants of us that we never have to make any adjustment in our thinking. The Pharisees, as well as all of us need conversion, the need to be willing to give up an old vision, and accept a new one in humility. May God bless us. PROOF OF LOVEThe proof of love is in the works. Where love exists, it works great things. But when it ceases to act, it ceases to exist.TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONIn 1971, the Vatican Congregation for Divine Worship completed a survey of the presidents of the national liturgical commissions around the world. How were children doing in the liturgical reform? Probably to their surprise, the cardinals learned of special weekday Masses for children designed to teach them how to participate on Sunday, Masses with separate components for children. The decision was made quickly to develop adaptations for Masses where children were a majority of the assembly. Changes would include a simpler structure, understandable texts, a simplified Lectionary, more active participation, and most surprisingly, new Eucharistic Prayers. By 1973 the work was done, and with very specific advice from Pope Paul VI, including the need for two new Eucharistic Prayers, the Directory for Masses with Children was published on December 20, a timely Christmas gift for the children of the world. The prayers are the first to be written fresh in a modern language—not Latin, but French and German—then translated into English, Italian, and Spanish. With a sense of caution, these new prayers were approved for three years, until 1977, but it soon became apparent that they had truly been embraced.Arnold Helping HandsWe want to thank many parishioners who generously contribute their time, talent and treasure to Our Lady of the Sierra Helping Hands program.
