Discovering History in Nature

Beaver's Bend State Park near Broken Bow, Oklahoma was the location for this month's outdoor activity for Troop 84. Upon arrival, the boys ate lunch by the riverside and joined in a game of "Chase the Squirrel". After lunch, the boys hit the trail, hiking a threeand-a-half mile trail called "Lookout Trail". While on the trail, the boys found new types of moss and berries that they had never seen before. The particular berry that caught the boys attention was the American Beautyberry. Many boys commented on its beautiful purple hue and pondered whether it was edible. The older Scouts (those who had training in plant identification) put their heads together and finally determined that the berry was safe to eat. However, despite this determination, no one wanted to be the first to try the berry. It was Assistant Scoutmaster, Jonathan Garrison, who finally stepped up and offered to try them first. When the taste was found to be delightful by Jonathan, many of the boys grabbed a handful to try. After many sour faces and complaints about the "pine-needle" taste, the boys discovered that their Scoutmaster has a very odd set of taste buds.

After the trail side snack, they continued up

the side of the ridge. Soon old foundations of small buildings began cropping up around the trail. The foundations, the last remains of Civilian Conservation Corps buildings, left little evidence of their intended purposes. This only served to fuel the boy's imagination in speculating their use. It was a great opportunity to give a synopsis of the CCC program of the 1930s.

The Webelos of the Troop also joined the older scouts but took a shorter, one mile hike called "The Nature Trail". Along the trail, there are place cards identifying the various trees along the trail. After the hike, the boys worked on several requirements for their Outdoorsmen badge; particularly, their outdoor code and manner.

At the end of the day, many of the boys were surprised by how much fun they had. For some, it was the first time that they had been out in nature and they were loving every minute. The monthly outdoor activity is eagerly anticipated by many of the boys. It gives them a chance to explore, learn, and sometimes, simply run a little wild.

The men's group from Faith Presbyterian Church in Aledo, Texas spent three days giving the gym and school building some much needed TLC. The group fabricated a new entry way on the east side of the gym to match the recently-added entry way of the west side. They also replaced and painted several window frames in both the gym and school building. We're so grateful to the Faith Presbyterian Men's Group

for sacrificing their free time to refresh our cherished landmarks.

Several of the boys pose in front of a civil war era cannon at Fort Towson. The tour was part of a weekly field trip

program at the school.

The Goodland Indians played their first flag football exhibition game against Grayson Christian Academy. Ultimately, it was a hard fought loss but the boys continue to practice several times a week. The boys love the chance to learn the

fundamentals of football and to represent Goodland in the community.

Christian and Seth push off the bank to start their journey on the Mountain Fork River. This starting point is known as "The Rock Garden". Rockwall Presbyterian Church of Rockwall, Texas sponsored the trip with the boys. Rockwall has been canoeing with boys

for many years now.
