Online Magazine Assignment - Ms. Feldmann's Class

Online Magazine Assignment

So, I want you to be reading more. Absent a disability, your reading and writing skills will be mirrors of one another. Therefore, you need to read more to help your vocabulary and to become a stronger and more persuasive writer.

Here’s your assignment. You need to find an online magazine that includes content that explores things you are interested in. Now, an online magazine is not the same as an online news site. The New York Times, , etc. are not magazines. To count as a magazine there needs to be more of an editorial bent. A magazine is more subjective in nature whereas a newspaper or news outlet is [supposed to be] an objective account of things that are happening.

You may choose your online magazine from the list below, or you may submit one to me for approval. Once you select your magazine, you will:

• Read 4 articles/essays from the magazine

• Briefly summarize each of the articles (3-4 sentences for each summary)

• Analyze any authorial bias you see either in the individual articles or in the magazine as a whole and cite evidence from the magazine when analyzing this bias (1-2 paragraphs)

That’s it. I really do want you to find one that will interest you. Most of these have apps that you can put on your phone, so when you have down time, instead of snapchatting stupid faces to your friends, you can do something a little more productive.

Here are some magazines you may choose from (or you can have me approve another one):

• Slate

• Wired

• Nautilus

• The Economist

• Salon

• The Atlantic

• Grantland

• Jezebel

• Harper’s

You will turn this assignment in on Wednesday, April 22.
