Course Description: Lecture 3 cr. This course examines the natural sources of medicinal compounds and their traditional use throughout history. It also provides a review of the approaches utilized in the development of therapeutic agents based upon these natural resources. *This course/topic has been approved for the pillars of Intellectual Engagement #5.Diversity and #munity Engagement.

Course Topics: Drug design and discovery inspired by natural products, rainforest biodiversity, conservation, ecology, ethnobotany, indigenous knowledge, intellectual property rights.

Course Objectives: Through the examination of the historical use of natural products for medicinal purposes students will:

? Gain an awareness of the role of medicines in traditional and contemporary societies. ? Explore real-world applications of traditional medicinal practices through peer led

discussions. ? Enhance teamwork and interpersonal skills by participation in group activities. ? Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills through peer discussion, group

presentations and written reports.

Student Learning Outcomes: By the end of this course, the student will be able to: ? Critically assess primary scientific papers relating to the topics presented in this course. ? Demonstrate an awareness of the societal issues relating to ownership of knowledge of indigenous peoples. ? Identify the significance of natural products in traditional and contemporary medicine. ? Correlate the relationship between the chemical and physical properties of medicinal compounds with their biological properties. ? Follow the synthetic approaches utilized in drug discovery, design, and development.
