CDR Marks graduated from The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina with a Bachelors of Science in Biology in May 1994. Following commissioning, he commenced flight training in Pensacola, FL. After completing training at NAS Corpus Christi, TX and NAS Whiting Field, FL he earned his “Wings of Gold” as an Unrestricted Naval Aviator in January 1997.

After completing initial training in the H-46D at NAS North Island, CA he was assigned to the “Chargers” of HC-6 at NS Norfolk, VA. While there, he served as the squadron NATOPS/CRM Officer/Instructor. His deployments included two to the Arabian Gulf aboard the USS SANTA BARBARA (AE-28) and the USS SEATTLE (AOE-3) in support of FIFTH Fleet operations in the region, as well as numerous humanitarian and support operations in the Atlantic and Caribbean.

In January 2001, CDR Marks reported to the “Vigilant Eagles” of HT-18 at NAS Whiting Field, FL as a rotary wing flight instructor. While there, he was a Flight Leader and squadron NATOPS Officer and Standardization Pilot. As part of the US Navy’s helicopter community reorganization, he then transitioned to the MH-60S Knighthawk, completing training at HSC-3 in NAS North Island, CA.

CDR Marks reported for duty to the “Dragon Whales” of HSC-28 at NS Norfolk, VA in November, 2003. There he completed another deployment to the Arabian Gulf and served as an Assistant Detachment Officer-in-Charge and Assistant Squadron Operations Officer. During this tour he completed Naval Command and Staff College (JPME-1) and attended the Joint Forces Staff College (JPME-2), ultimately earning a Masters of Arts Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College. Following this tour, CDR Marks reported to the “Chargers” of HSC-26 again for duty as a Department Head and operational Detachment Officer-in-Charge on multiple detachments, including DET -1, the “World Famous Desert Hawks” forward deployed to Bahrain. He also served as squadron Maintenance Officer.

In January, 2008 CDR Marks transferred to Stuttgart, Germany where he served as the Chief of Black Sea and Eurasia Exercises and an Operational Assessment analyst for Headquarters, U.S. European Command. In May, 2011 CDR Marks then reported to Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command/Fifth Fleet, forward deployed to Bahrain, as the Deputy Director of Theater Security Cooperation. In June, 2013 he then reported to the National Airborne Operations Center at Offutt AFB in Omaha, NE where he served as the Strategic Operations section head and Presidential Nuclear Strike Advisor for Operations Team 3. CDR Marks reported to the NROTC Unit, The Citadel as the Executive Officer in April, 2016.

CDR Marks’ awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal (two awards), the Joint Service Achievement Medal (two awards), the Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards). He is married to the former Kendra Furrh of Edgewood, Texas and together they have two wonderful daughters, Caroline (aged 12) and Rebecca (aged 9).
