What magnet programs are available for grades 6, 7, and 8 at South Miami K-8?

The Double C Magnet Program consisting of:

CAT - Computer Arts Technology In CAT students will learn new ways to create art through the use of hardware and software applications such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and Painter.

CIE - Culturally Inspired Education In CIE students will learn to create original works of art by experiencing art, food, fashion, architecture, etc. from many different cultures.

If students want the visual arts photography, strings, band, theatre or dance magnet programs, they need to apply and audition at South Miami Middle School.

Who may apply for the Double C Magnet program?

Our middle school program is lottery based. Students are selected through a random selection process. Students interested in our program must complete the Official Magnet Application by January 15th and select our school and correct program and meet eligibility requirements.

Is the program full-time?

Yes, students are enrolled in the regular academic curriculum with the two elective choices being a double period of magnet class daily.

What classes are they missing?

No basic instruction is eliminated. The two periods of magnet instruction are the two elective choices. South Miami K-8 Center offers gifted, advanced and regular academic classes for grades 6, 7, or 8.

Is the program free?

Yes, the program is free except for any required supplies (i.e., sketchbooks, notebooks, etc.) and required annual donation.

Is transportation free and where does the bus pick up the students?

Free transportation is offered to those students residing within transportation boundaries. Students will receive bus passes indicating bus pick-up and return locations during the Summer. Transportation is not available for all students and is offered only to those residing within the established transportation boundaries.

Are the talent classes held after school?

No. The classes become a regular part of the student’s school curriculum. The students receive regular assignments and grades are given on the report card.

Is After School Care available?

Yes, South Miami K-8 Center has a principal-operated Before/After School Care program until 6:00pm.

Is South Miami K-8 Center a mandatory uniform school?

Yes, we do enforce our uniform policy. For elementary students, shirts are polo-style (with or without logo) in navy blue, or red. Bermuda-style shorts, long pants, skorts and jumpers are to be navy blue or khaki. Red school spirit shirts will be sold in the school store and may be worn on Fridays with uniform pants or blue jeans.

For middle school (6th - 8th) students, shirts are polo-style (with or without logo) in gold, or maroon. Bermuda-style shorts, long pants, skorts, and jumpers are to be khaki. School spirit shirts will be sold in the school store and may be worn on Fridays

If my child is accepted, what would the next step be?

If, and when your child is accepted into the program, you will receive an acceptance letter and you must respond online by the indicated deadline. Once you accept the offer online, you will receive by email other documents in order to complete the student’s registration in the magnet program and the school.

¿Quién puede aplicar para el programa Doble C?

 

El programa Double C para los grados 6,7, y 8 es por lotería. Se seleccionan los estudiantes que apliquen, cumplan los requisitos establecidos, y completen la aplicación oficial del programa Magnet para el día 15 de enero. Se les notificara a los estudiantes seleccionados el día 15 de marzo. El estudiante debe responder si acepta entrar al programa a más tardar para la fecha indicada.  

¿El programa es tiempo completo?

Sí, todos los estudiantes tendrán todas las materias incluyendo dos electivos y un período doble diario de la clase de magnet.

 

¿Qué clases perderán?

Ninguna materia básica será eliminada. Nuestra escuela tiene clases académicas gifted, avanzadas y regulares.

 

¿Es el programa gratuito?

Sí. El programa es completamente gratuito excepto por los materiales de trabajo que deberán comprar y donación anual requerida.

¿Es el transporte gratis? ¿Cómo podemos tomar el autobús?

El transporte es gratis para las escuelas públicas del condado Miami-Dade. De acuerdo con las reglas establecidas por el condado, los estudiantes podrán recibir pases para el autobús y serán recogidos y devueltos en las direcciones asignadas. Los pases son enviados por el departamento de transporte a los estudiantes que viven en la designada área de transporte. No todos los estudiantes reciben transporte, solamente aquellos que viven dentro del área designada por el departamento de transporte.

¿Cuándo reciben los estudiantes las clases de talento?

Las clases de talento forman parte del horario regular de los estudiantes. Cada estudiante recibe tareas a diario y son evaluados con una calificación.

¿Existe cuidado de niños después del horario regular de clases?

Sí. El programa de cuidado de niños existe hasta las 6:00 P.M. de lunes a viernes.

¿Es obligatorio el uniforme en la escuela South Miami K-8 Center?

 

Sí, nuestra escuela tiene como requisito usar el uniforme escolar. Para los estudiantes de la escuela elemental el uniforme consiste en camisetas tipo polo de colores azul marino o rojo con pantalones, shorts, faldas, jumper, bermudas, falda-pantalón kaki.

Para los estudiantes de la escuela secundaria (6to- 8vo), las camisetas deben ser tipo polo y en color amarillo oro o marrón. Todos los estudiantes deberán usar bermudas o pantalones largos de color kaki.

 

¿Si mi hijo (a) es aceptado en el programa, cual es el siguiente paso?

 

Si su hijo(a) es aceptado en el programa, usted recibirá una carta de aceptación que deberá confirmar en línea (aplicación en el internet) antes de la fecha indicada. La escuela luego le enviara por correo electrónico otros documentos necesarios para la registración del niño(a)
