PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

We warmly welcome you and your child to Woolsthorpe Primary School and extend an invitation to you and your family to take an active role in our school community.

As a school community we set high expectations and standards of learning. The school has an enrolment of 96 pupils currently. There is 11 staff: 1 Principal, 7 teachers and 3 Educational Support Staff members. As a team we strive for a culture of learning and continuous improvement with a focus on innovation.

Our school strives “to provide a dynamic learning environment that engages students who work to achieve their personal best in an atmosphere of mutual respect and cooperation.” It is our intention to promote the values of Respect, Excellence, Care and Teamwork (see our trademark). We show through our actions that we care and provide a safe learning community for all members to achieve their best. High quality programs with an emphasis on Literacy, Numeracy and integration of Information and Communication Technologies further combine to provide an exciting and flexible learning environment designed to meet students' individual needs.

Students at Woolsthorpe Primary School feel safe at school and are engaged in their learning as indicated in our Attitudes to School Surveys. Our Years 5 and 6 students' sense of belonging and stimulating learning environment at school is well above the State measures. Friday assemblies run by the Student Leadership Team allows for a celebration of students success and involves parents as partners in learning.

Our school is recognised by teachers, parents, students as well as those outside our community for its caring, positive and safe learning environment. Our Parents and Friends Association (PFA) each year fundraise and resource many of the programs we offer. School Council members are also actively involved in the school and play an important role in future planning and directions. As a community we look to build and refine our work around students learning as we enter an exciting chapter in the school's future with our new facilities through the Building Futures program.

Our environment "Ground Force" team provides students in all grades opportunities to learn through a hands on approach to literacy and numeracy. In 2011 we started our Kitchen Garden program where students cook healthy meals with produce from the veggie gardens and apple orchards. We also have chickens that lay eggs as part of our environment and sustainability program.

If you are have any questions, you are more than welcome to make an appointment with myself or your child's teacher.

We look forward to working with you during your time at Woolsthorpe Primary School.

INTRODUCTION

WOOLSTHORPE Primary School is situated 26 km north of Warrnambool, amidst an established rural community in the Moyne Shire Council. The school was opened in 1862 -151 years ago and has a current enrolment of 96 students. In 2013 we moved into a new school building, we also revamped the original Bluestone building. These new buildings do not change the culture at Woolsthorpe Primary School as we have always been recognised for our caring, positive and safe learning environment. The steady enrolment and planned increase in numbers in future is testimony to the standing WOOLSTHORPE Primary School has in the community.

The majority of students are bussed in to school each day on our two buses. Woolsthorpe Primary School draws students from Mailors Flat, Winslow, Warrnambool, Caramut, Minjah and Ballangeich and other areas. The other 1/3 of our enrolment is from the Woolsthorpe Township.

At WOOLSTHORPE Primary School all students are offered the opportunity and support to grow in confidence and self-esteem in a flexible, happy and positive environment. Students are expected to increasingly take initiative, accept responsibility for both their learning and their behaviour, and to exercise various forms of leadership. Our main aim is to foster in students, qualities and skills that will enable them to adapt to a changing world.

ENVIRONMENT

The school was originally opened in 1862, 151 years ago! New school buildings were built and opened in 2013.

Our new school buildings were officially opened on 18th October 2013 with a Open Plan design consisting of four open plan teaching learning centres, 1 x portable classroom, Bluestone building, Art studio and multi-purpose room and all are air conditioned. The buildings are surrounded by spacious playing areas, which include an oval, attractive gardens, adventure playgrounds, chooks, kitchen garden area, as well as asphalt, grassed and shaded play areas.

The school has a reputation for our excellent grounds highlighted by being a past winner of the DEECD Victorian Schools Garden Awards Winner.

A major feature of Woolsthorpe Primary School is the State of Art – Information Technology used at this school. Every class has an Interactive Apple TV Unit, all students in grade 3 to 6 have an individually owned iPad. Every student in Prep to 2 has access to an individual school owned iPad, and all staff have an individual iPad. Students also have access to iMac computers. We were one of the first schools in the state to introduce smart boards and iPads right across the school. In 2014 our school will be receiving a Polycom Teleconferencing Unit and our school is the first small school in this area to receive one of these units!

Woolsthorpe Primary School will continue to provide a quality education for its students so they can become effective members of the community.

The school’s expectations are consistent with the school motto

“AIMING FOR EXCELLENCE”

CHILDREN BEGINNING SCHOOL

Officially school starts for students on the 30th of January 2014. Because little children tire easily during the first term of school, especially when the weather is hot, Prep children will not attend school on Wednesdays during term 1. Parents are also requested to monitor their child closely, and if they consider that the child is distressed or overtired, they can arrange to pick up their child early during the month of February.

TRANSITION/ORIENTATION

In order to provide your child with a smooth transition from kindergarten/home to their first year of schooling we run a transition program during term 4. The transition program aims to ensure that your child feels comfortable, safe & happy at Woolsthorpe Primary School. It provides an opportunity for your child to get to know other children, Miss Daly and other students and teachers around the school. The transition program will run over 4 days during term 4 and will involve your child taking part in numerous fun & educational activities. There will also be an information afternoon for parents. The state wide orientation day in 2013 is December 10th. More information will go home about this early term 4.

SCHOOL ENTRY ASSESSMENT

During his/her first month at school, your child will work individually with the Grade Prep teacher on a series of tasks to find out a starting place for formal school learning to begin.

The tasks involve:

• Identifying lower & upper case letters of the alphabet.

• Early Years Numeracy Interview

• English Online Interview

• Sharing a specially written book to find out concepts the child has already developed about print

These assessment tasks are not tests or exams but they do tell the teacher a lot about each child’s readiness to begin formal learning.

EARLY YEARS LITERACY & NUMERACY PROGRAM

Our Literacy program at Woolsthorpe Primary School is a whole school approach to teaching and learning about literacy. Our Literacy approach involves a daily 2 hour structured reading and writing session where children are involved in whole class, small group and individual reading and writing tasks to support their literacy development. Our Numeracy structure and strategies are similar to Literacy and are based on the belief that all children can succeed given sufficient time and support. Students are involved in many open-ended activities where they can develop their confidence and mathematical skills.

INTEREST IN YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING.

If your child is to develop an interest in learning and in school, you, the parents, must show interest. Talk with your child about his/her school, show interest in and celebrate the paintings & drawings etc.. which your child brings home from school, come and see your child at work in school. If a young child is to learn to read, they must know what reading is. They will learn this, if you read stories to them at home and if they see you reading books, magazines and newspapers. Modelling of reading is vital to children’s early literacy development.

Your child is unique and will develop in their own way and time. Every child goes through the stages of development in the same order but will spend different lengths of time and display different characteristics at each stage.

The following information website- gives you an overview of each stage of development from newborn to school age and ways that you can help their learning along the way.

• Babies (0–12 months)

• Toddlers (1–3 years)

• Preschoolers (3–5 years)

• School age (5–8 years)

To give you further practical information we have included a link to the Raising Children Network website, an invaluable resource for parents. Supported by the Australian Government, the Raising Children Network website features reliable, research based material and resources that offer practical information and suggestions, step by step guides in areas such as child development, behaviour, health, nutrition, play and learning, communication, sleep and safety. It also has a section for parents on looking after your own needs.

For more information, see: Raising Children Network

TECHNOLOGY & LEARNING

Our school aims to be innovative and inspiring in our search for excellence in teaching and learning. Our iPad program in grades 3-6 allows the opportunity for our students to enter a new world of learning and possibilities. Research shows students are more motivated and engaged in learning when they have their own access to technology. As well as iPads from years 3-6 all classrooms have Interactive Projectors and Apple TV, access to iMacs, Macbooks and iPads. Woolsthorpe Primary School is one of the first Government schools in the State to have this sort of technology in EVERY classroom. We are recognised in Victoria for our innovative use of technology. Our school blog has information about the work we are doing in this area-

ASSESSMENT AND REPORTING

Reporting to Parents:

Formal written reports are sent to parents both at mid-year and in December. These reports are part of a state wide reporting system and report in all AuVELS areas using ABCD ratings.

Parent appointments can be made in Term 1 and Term 3 when we hold parent teacher conferences. Teachers may require a meeting at other times if they feel one is necessary, likewise parents may seek an appointment with classroom teachers if necessary.

If the classroom teacher feels it necessary, an Individual Learning Plan for your child will be formulated with you. This will occur in Term 1 and be evaluated on a regular basis.

INFORMATION & COMMUNICATION- NEWSLETTERS and TIQBIZ

The school keeps parents informed through the weekly Newsletter, tiqbiz, Facebook and other special notices. Please ask your child if he/she has any notices for you. As well as items of community interest, the Newsletter contains information and comment by the principal, teachers, and children. The Newsletter always contains a CALENDAR of coming events.

Copies of the School Strategic Plan are available on our blog- . The School Strategic Plan sets out the school’s commitment to continuous improvement in standards of achievement in all areas of school life. It is the school’s platform for planning, decision making and resource allocation. The Strategic Plan is a genuine understanding between the school and the Department Of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) about the directions the school will take in a four year period.

The School has an active blog/website which provides up to date information throughout the year. The blog also showcases students learning and programs happening at the school. Blog address-

All parent committees are vital to the existence and functioning of each and every school. We have termly meetings at the school so please come along, whether it is for a chat, to voice your opinions or to hit us with that great idea!! We look forward to seeing you in 2014, in whatever capacity.

SUPERVISION

At the school, we do our utmost to ensure that your child receives the best care and attention.

• The grounds are supervised during all recess and lunch times.

• Despite supervision accidents do sometimes happen. It is therefore important that at all times the school has an emergency phone number where you can be contacted. Please supply at least one other person the school can contact in an emergency. (Similarly, illness can strike at any time.)

• No child is allowed to leave the school grounds between the time of arrival and dismissal. The school must receive written notification if a child is to go home for lunch.

• The Department of Education does not have accident insurance for students so this is the responsibility of parents to arrange.

SCHOOL BUS TRAVEL

Our School is serviced daily by two buses: the Winslow and the Minjah routes.

This is done early in term 1 and a new application is required each year.

EXCURSIONS

From time to time each grade has excursions & incursions, so that they have direct experiences related to their general classroom programs and learning focuses. These excursions & incursions are an integral part of your child's education and as such, we would expect all children to participate. Most of these will be covered by the annual subject contribution levy. A permission form to attend local excursions is to be signed at the beginning of each school year, a note will be sent home.

SWIMMING

The swimming program for all children is held in Term 3 each year at a heated indoor pool. Swimming is an important lifesaving skill therefore all children are expected to participate in the 8 sessions. Parents are welcome to attend. The cost of this program is included in the yearly subject contribution levy set for all children. All swimming groups are taught by qualified swimming instructors. It is expected that children have developed some water familiarity by the time they commence school.

VALUABLES

It is advisable that children leave valuable toys, sports equipment, games etc. at home as the school cannot be responsible for them if they are lost, stolen or broken.

ABSENCE

If your child is absent from school, you are required to give a reason for the absence in writing to the child’s teacher, dated and signed. Please do not send your child to school if he/she is ill. A sick child does not enjoy school and the school does not have the facilities to provide necessary nursing care. Parents will be called to pick up sick kids. Student absences are monitored closely by the school and parents notified of any unexplained absences.

LATE

If your child arrives at school after the bell at 9.00 a.m., you are required to go to the Office to sign them in. We encourage children to be punctual for safety reasons and to ensure a smooth start to the school day.

SCHOOL VISITORS

In the interests of the students’ safety the school has developed a policy with regard to visitors to the school. ALL visitors and parent helpers are directed to a sign-in book at the office.

LEAVING EARLY

We ask that any person collecting a child early please go first to the office to sign their child out.

CHILD HEALTH & WELLBEING

MEDICAL HISTORY

At all times, your child's class teacher is working in association with you in the best interests of your child. Please ensure that you inform the teacher of any illness, emotional stress or worries that your child may have in order that due consideration may be given. Such information will be regarded as confidential.

EMERGENCY INFORMATION

Individual information sheets are kept at the school in case of accident. If a serious accident should occur, we endeavour to contact the parents before seeking medical assistance, including calling an ambulance. This is not always possible. Any decision made regarding treatment of your child will be with the intention of performing our duties in the child's best interest.

PLEASE KEEP THE SCHOOL INFORMED OF ANY CHANGE OF ADDRESS, CHANGE OF TELEPHONE NUMBER (EITHER PRIVATE OR BUSINESS) SO THE SCHOOL HAS A POINT OF CONTACT.

Remember, it is extremely important that each child has filed away in the office, an up to date or a current information sheet in case of accident or illness, so please if any details change please make sure you inform the office as soon as possible.

MEDICINES / EPIPEN (for children with Anaphylaxis)

The school is equipped with first aid facilities sufficient to deal with minor injuries. Care and attention is always given to the extent considered appropriate. We ensure that all of our teachers have first aid qualifications. Many children attending school need regular medication to control illnesses such as asthma, hayfever, epilepsy etc. Parents whose children have such needs should firstly discuss the matter with the Principal, and then acquaint the class teacher with full details. This includes an Epipen if the child is diagnosed as Anaphylactic. If this is the case we would also need a copy of the child’s Anaphylaxis Action Plan.

MEDICATION AT SCHOOL

If this is necessary, please assist the teacher by labelling the tablets or mixture with your child's name, the dose and the time the medication is to be given. Written (dated and signed) permission must be provided. Medicine will otherwise not be administered. It is preferable that parents bring the medication to school at the appropriate time and administer it themselves.

ASTHMA CARE

The DEECD has recently published a new policy for the management of asthmatic children in schools. Asthmatic students should have available in the school, the appropriate medication required. This medication is kept in the children's bag or with the child’s teacher. Students are required to have a school Asthma Action Plan completed by the Parents, which will be held in the students file. These forms which include advice and directions from your Doctor, are available from the school office.

IMMUNISATION

To enrol at school, your child needs an Immunisation Certificate – This certificate is automatically received from the Australian Childhood Immunisation Register after your child has completed the 4 year old vaccine schedule and all required immunisations are complete

STUDENT ACCIDENT INSURANCE ARRANGEMENT

Will DEECD pay medical and other expenses of people injured at school or during school activities?

If someone is injured at school, or during a school organised activity, the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development will not pay their medical and other expenses.

Parents and guardians are generally responsible for paying the costs of medical treatment for injured students, including any transport costs. Most medical costs will be refundable by Medicare. If you are a member of an ambulance or health insurance fund, you may also be able to claim transport or other expenses from the fund.

The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development does not hold accident insurance for school students.

Is other insurance cover available? YES

The Department is aware of one company – EBM Insurance Brokers Pty. Ltd., who provide accident insurance for students. These policies provide benefits for students who are injured in accidents for a reasonably low cost. Other insurers may also do so.

For further information, please contact the school.
