This is accomplished through the NETC approved classroom curriculum, written tests, hands-on leadership exercises, advanced drill training, team building, goal setting, and inspections.Discussion/General Information: Enclosures (1) through (8) provide pertinent information for instructors, cadets, parents, and chaperones. Participating Instructors are requested to provide prospective cadets, parents and chaperones applicable portions of this LOI.The Area 10 Central Texas, 2014 LA will be conducted at Canyon Lake Sunny Side on Highway 306, Canyon Lake, Texas. Dates are 23-26 June 2014.Monday, June 23rd is check-in at Smithson Valley H.S. NJROTC classroom no later than 0900 proceeding to Canyon Lake Sunny Side at the end of the day. Smithson Valley NJROTC will provide transportation to and from LA at Canyon Lake. Unit P.T. Gear is the uniform for check-in.Graduation will be at 1400 Thursday, June 26th at Smithson Valley High School.The cadets chosen to attend should be the next year’s unit leaders. They will be responsible to take the experience and lessons-learned back to their units. All cadets attending will be required to pass the NJROTC Physical Fitness Test and not have any restrictive medical conditions that would prevent them from participating in all physical activity at LA.The maximum number of cadets attending will be 60. The billets will be evenly distributed within all schools expressing a desire to participate. These numbers will be adjusted based upon male/female enrollment, and some schools not utilizing their allotted billets.Administration: *** Standard Release Forms, NJROTC Health Screening Questionnaire, Cadet Data Card, and Cadet Statement will be brought by the instructor at check-in. The cost of the camp will be $150.00 for each cadet. In order to secure reservations/equipment all registration fees will be required by 15 May, 2014. Please make all checks payable to NJROTC Smithson Valley Booster Club. Each cadet attending should be covered for health and accident insurance during training. SCREEN YOUR CADETS CAREFULLY to ensure that you do not nominate someone who may have medical or physical fitness problems which will prevent them from participating. Please ensure THE MEDICAL/ACCIDENT INSURANCE DATA on THE STANDARD RELEASE FORM is complete. “GEICO” or “BLUE CROSS” is not enough! The company name plus policy/ ID number or telephone confirmation number is required. The address of the insurance company is required. If this requested information is not received, or if the information indicates the cadet is not fit for training, or the insurance data is lacking, he/she will not be accepted. When screening the NJROTC cadet Standard Release Form, pay particular attention to cases where the cadet is taking medication that may limit participation. (2) A PFT will be given on Tuesday, 24 June. Any cadets who fail to pass will not be sent home but will be ineligible for the LA Silver Cord. There will not be a remedial PFT program for Leadership Academy. SNSI’s must ensure all cadets that are coming to Leadership Academy can pass the PFT.(3) All cadets successfully completing the academic, physical and practical requirements of LA will receive their silver cord. All instructor assignments will be finalized and instructors notified by the 15th of May 2014.SAFETY: This LA will follow Operation Risk Management procedures. There is nothing more important during the LA than the safety, health, and welfare of the cadets. All participants of the LA will adhere to the following:When engaged in physical activity, cadets will carry or have water immediately accessible to them at all times. Remain vigilant to the signs of the heat stress in every cadet. Ensure each cadet is dressed appropriately for their planned activities.There will be a First Aid/ CPR qualified staff member present during each event requiring physical activity.LA will follow the posted heat warning system. All instructors must remain alert to hazards and potential unsafe conditions. Always keep in mind what may happen while cadets are engaged in any activity and look for ways to make that activity safe.You will be briefed on medical facilities available during LA, please pay particular attention to the details and procedures on what to do in case of an accident or medical emergency. Should a medical emergency arise, the instructor shall contact the assigned medical personnelAsthma/Diabetes: Cadets with an asthmatic condition (a yes answer to question #8 on the Health Risk Screening Form) are NOT eligible to attend Leadership Academy nor are insulin dependent diabetics.All cadets will attend the lesson on Training Time Out (TTO) on their arrival. TTO will be the first topic presented. We will ensure all cadets understand ANYONE can stop training during LA for any health/ safety concern.All instructors will be briefed regarding individuals at high risk for a medical problem during LA and what action(s) should be part of a planned response.Operational Risk Management Assessment worksheets will be filled out for each activity. Training on ORM and these sheets will occur at the initial instructor meeting on the first day of LA.INSTRUCTORS’ INFORMATION SHEETGeneral. All NJROTC cadets should be advised the training at Leadership Academy is demanding and challenging. Classes consist of subjects on physical fitness, how to lead physical fitness, leadership (discussions and vignettes), advanced military drill including; preparation for inspection and pass-in-review, promotion boards and how to conduct them, self-discipline, marksmanship fundamentals, goal setting, team building, service etiquette, and the opportunity to form a team and conduct exhibition drill. (See NAVEDTRA 37121-C).Cadet selection. Selected cadets must be eligible to hold a leadership position in their unit. This means they must:Be physically able to lead the company in drill and marching movements.Have no disciplinary problems.Be in good standing with their NJROTC Unit Be motivated and desire to attend.Be proficient at drill.Have completed Basic Leadership Training (BLT).Have passed the PFT in the last six weeks prior to attending Leadership Academy.Grooming. Cadets attending must be in strict compliance with the uniform regulations in reference (b).Uniform and Equipment. See enclosure (5). Ribbons and rank must be worn with Navy Service Uniform for pictures and graduation. Cost.Cost for LA will be $150.00 per cadet. The cost will cover meals, lodging, certificates and transportation during the LA. A school or unit check, bank check, personal check, or money order will be acceptable. Checks and money orders should be made payable to NJROTC Smithson Valley H.S. Booster Club. Please ensure payment is made no later than 15 May 2014. No refunds will be made after supplies and reservations have been secured for the amount of cadets planned for. There are a few rules that are unavoidable: Advise cadets they will be immediately sent home if caught using tobacco products, using or possessing drugs, alcoholic beverages, weapons or fraternizing, curfew violations (after TAPS) participating- in or demonstrating (including drawing) any gang signs, symbols or activities. Your cadet has demonstrated the motivation, aptitude, and leadership in the NJROTC program necessary to be selected to attend the prestigious Leadership Academy (LA). The purpose of LA is to prepare OUTSTANDING NJROTC cadets to assume leadership roles in their respective units. This program is mentally and physically challenging. Classes will be challenging, rewarding and memorable, consisting of subjects on physical fitness, leadership, military drill, self discipline, goal setting, team building and other leadership related subjects.Cadet selection. In addition to demonstrated leadership potential a cadet must:A. Have no disciplinary problems.B. Be motivated and desire to attend.C. Be willing to accept military style leadership and be proficient at drill (or willing to learn).Have completed Basic Leadership Training (BLT).Have passed the Physical Fitness Test in the last six weeks prior to attending LA.G. Safety is our paramount concern when conducting an event such as LA. Occasionally, outstanding cadets have medical conditions which may or may not limit participation in some events. In these circumstances, medical waivers will be entertained based on a doctor’s recommendation. A doctor’s evaluation and recommendation must accompany all waiver requests. When filling out the Standard Release Form and Health Questionnaire, please list all your cadet’s medical conditions and medications including over the counter drugs. Cadets sent to LA with conditions or medications not listed on their Standard Release Form will be immediately sent home at the parents/guardian’s expense and camp fees will not be refunded due to having purchased the supplies, food, and equipment necessary to conduct the camp based upon planned attendance. Grooming. As a future leader, your cadet should be thoroughly familiar with expected grooming standards. Cadets who arrive improperly groomed will be given the choice to go to a military barber for a haircut or be sent home at parent/guardian expense, LA fees will not be refunded.Uniform and Equipment. See the enclosed packing list that contain all items your cadet is expected to bring. As a future leader, it is their responsibility to make this happen and get everything packed. This list also includes items, which are forbidden: alcohol, tobacco of any sort, weapons, drugs and clothing with unacceptable language or pictures. A “Sea Bag” or suitcase inspection for compliance will be performed the first evening. Cadets who fail to bring required items will lose points on inspection and not be adequately prepared for all evolutions of the LA, again, resulting in a loss of points toward graduation. Those who choose to bring items which are forbidden will be sent home at their/your expense and no camp fees will be refunded. Because these acts represent deliberate choices, cadets will not be given a second chance. They have been thoroughly briefed by their instructors.Forms: Complete the Cadet Data Form and return it to the NJROTC Unit at your cadet’s school. Cadets reporting to LA without these forms will be sent home.Cost for this event will be $150.00 per cadet. The cost will cover meals, lodging, certificates and transportation. This is a non-refundable fee so make sure your son/daughter can attend and has passed the Physical Fitness Test. Keep in mind that we have to pay for services we contract for whether an individual shows up or not.
