INTERN SPECIALTY LEADERPOSITION DESCRIPTION INTRODUCTION The Intern Specialty Leader (SL) provides advice and counsel to the Navy Surgeon General via the Medical Corps Chief’s office on matters pertaining to Post Graduate Year 1 (PGY-1) Medical Corps trainees. The Intern SL ensures continuous alignment with Navy Medicine strategic goals. The Intern SL must be physically located at a CONUS Navy MTF with PGY-1 trainees.DUTIES The Intern SL shall:Provide advice and counsel to Navy Medicine leadership on matters concerning scoring, placement and training of PGY-1 Graduate Medical Education trainees.Provide expertise for effective policy decisions to support and ensure graduating PGY-1’s are ready to assume the responsibility of serving as a General Medical Officer, Flight Surgeon, Undersea Medical Officer or enter residency training at the conclusion of PGY-1 training.Collaborate with Specialty Leaders, Navy Graduate Medical Education, BUPERS, Medical Corps Accessions, USU and GME leaders at respective training facilities to ensure a successful PGY-1 Graduate Medical Education Selection Board process. Attend Medical Education Policy Council meetings either in person or via video-teleconference.Mentor medical students and PGY-1’s regarding career opportunities and challenges.As specialty leader, serve as panel chair at Joint Graduate Medical Education Selection Board for Navy Transitional Interns. KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY POSITIONBoard-certified physician with a strong clinical and medical education background. Fleet/operational experience is preferred but not required.Expertise gained through diverse management/leadership positions such as a Division Officer, Department Head, Program Director or Command Intern Advisor.A strong interest in providing advocacy for all Navy PGY-1 programs across Navy Medicine.A working knowledge of Graduate Medical Education administration and a solid understanding of professional development, education and training.A track record of superior performance in previous positions.Excellent military bearing. No recent PFA failures.SUPERVISORY CONTROLS The Intern SL reports to the Navy Surgeon General via the Corps Chief’s Office. The Intern SL has no direct supervisory responsibilities.GUIDELINESThe incumbent will be guided in the performance of duties by instructions, policies and procedures of the Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery. Other guidelines may include: (1) DOD and OPNAV Instructions; (2) The Joint Commission Standards; (3) pertinent state and federal laws; (4) TRICARE, (5) OPNAVINST 1520.39 and relevant Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) PLEXITYThe selection process for PGY-1 trainees is complex and requires a panel Chairman that is aware of how to assess and critically appraise applications and select appropriate candidates. The incumbent must be able to adjust to a wide array of tasks, concepts and duties in support of the Surgeon General and Medical Corps Chief’s Office. This work environment requires a unique, adaptable individual with a variety of administrative and personal skills as well as the ability to forge strong intra and interdepartmental relationships. SCOPE AND EFFECTAs an assignment in the largest and most complex officer Corps in Navy Medicine, the scope of this position is both organizationally global and tactical to the level of the individual officer. The effect of this position is far reaching in terms of the sustainment, changing nature, and future growth of the Navy Physician community, as well as the successful full career development of individual Navy Medical Corps officers. ................
