May 28, 2008 - Narragansett Bay Commission

March 5, 2020Dear Educator,The Narragansett Bay Commission (NBC) is proud to sponsor its 27th annual student poster contest. The theme of this year’s contest is, Happy Toilet, Healthy Bay. The NBC would like students to artistically express this theme by decorating their own toilet. Students may use the template provided in this packet, which can be copied and distributed, or they can design and decorate their own toilet. Access to a toilet is a privilege, almost 2.5 billion people in the world don’t have access to one. The NBC would like to highlight the importance of the toilet, as well as how what we flush can directly affect our Narragansett Bay. It is important to remember to only flush the 3 Ps, poop, pee, and paper (septic safe toilet paper only). Toilets are often thought of as magic trash cans, because what is flushed will magically disappear, but flushing unwanted items down the toilet can be extremely harmful to wastewater treatment systems. For example, the “flushable” wipes on the market are wreaking havoc on wastewater treatment systems, because even though they flush, they do not break down and are causing major clogs in the pipes. The NBC has enclosed a copy of its Mr. Can coloring book to provide artistic inspiration for this year’s contest. Students are invited to be as creative as they would like in decorating their toilet. Older students may even want to include sanitation facts or other educational info in their design. Let’s work together to keep our toilets happy so that our Narragansett Bay can stay healthy. The contest rules are as follows:Students must be in grades K-6 and from one of the cities located in the NBC service district which include Providence, North Providence, Johnston, Central Falls, Lincoln, Pawtucket, Cumberland, Cranston, Smithfield and East Providence.Posters may be no larger than 11 x 17 and no smaller than 8 ? x 11.
