RENEW YOUR LICENSE

LICENSURE RENEWAL PROCESS

NC Standard Professional 2 (SP2) licenses must be renewed every five years. Failure to renew your NC SP 2 license makes one ineligible for employment unless a validation of your expired license is requested by an employing school system.

Credits Required to Renew License

• Five (5) semester hours or 8.0 units of renewal credit. Course work must be directly related to an individual’s professional responsibilities as a public school educator or to his or her area(s) of licensure.

o One contact hour in a workshop is equivalent to .01 CEU.

o Ten contact hours in a workshop is equivalent to 1 CEU.

o One semester hour from an approved college or university is equivalent to 1.5 units of credit.

• National Boards earn 7.5 renewal credits regardless of passing and must be renewed every ten years.

o These credits can count for 1 Literacy Credit and 1 Academic Subject Credit.

o According to State Board Policy, these credits cannot be split between two cycles. They can be used within the current cycle or carried over in full for the next renewal cycle.

*Literacy Credit – Literacy applies to all educators including Student Service Personnel and is not meant to limit or restrict the renewal credit process. Students who are College and Career Ready in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language (located in the ELA Common Core State Standards, CCSS, page 7) defines and offers a portrait of a literate graduate. It is critical to note that although the description is taken from the English Language Arts Common Core Standards, they are applicable and taught to every student at every grade level, and all teachers and student service personnel share in the development of literate graduates. Skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language support are prerequisites for all forms of 21st Century literacy, including:

o Informational Literacy

o Media Literacy

o Information, Media, and Technology Literacy

o Visual Literacy

o Civic Literacy

o Financial, Economic, and Entrepreneurial Literacy

o Health Literacy, and

o Environmental Literacy

**Technology Credit (Local Requirement) – We all know technology changes rapidly. Currituck educators will be provided with tools and resources to help support successful integration of technology and 21st Century skills development into standards-based curriculum and classroom practices.

***Principal Credits - Principals and Assistant Principals in a NC public school system that have an approved license renewal plan must earn 3 units of renewal credit during each five-year cycle focused on the principal’s role in teacher effectiveness, teacher evaluations, teacher support programs, teacher leadership, teacher empowerment, and teacher retention.

• For a license to remain current, all credit must be earned by the expiration date of the existing license.

• To renew an expired license, 10 semester hours or 15 units of renewal credit must be earned within the most recent five-year period.
