TCAF Six-man Football Rules

Established 2006

Revised July 2020

same as for the NCAA 11-man game except for the following variations:

1. Offense must advance 15 yards instead of 10 in four downs.

2. Each team has 6 players. Unless necessary to use the 11-man field, the six-man field is 80 yards by 40 yards, with the 40-yard line at the center of the field. Goal post uprights are 25 feet apart and the crossbar is 9 feet above the ground. Six-man hash marks are two feet outside the goal posts.

3. Unless the ball is kicked or forward passed, it may not be advanced across the line of scrimmage until after an exchange has been made between the receiver of the snap and another player. If a forward pass is thrown to the snapper, it must travel at least one yard in flight.

4. Length of quarter: Varsity 10 minutes; JV 8 minutes; between quarters: 2 minutes; between halves: 15 minutes.

5. The ball must travel 15 yards on a kickoff or be touched by the receiving team before members of the kicking team are eligible to touch it.

6. Kickoff is made from the kicking team's 30-yard line on a six-man field and there must be at least 3 players from the receiving team between the 30- and 35-yard lines.

7. At least 3 offensive players shall be on their line of scrimmage at the snap. (See Rule 7 of the NCAA Football Rules and Interpretations Book.)

8. Ball may be handed in any direction to a player during a scrimmage down behind the line of scrimmage.

9. If a fumble occurs before there has been an exchange or pass and if a player of the offensive team recovers it, he may not carry it beyond the line.

10. The ball is dead when a passer catches his own pass and it is ruled as an incomplete forward pass.

11. All players are eligible to catch a forward pass, except that a pass is ruled incomplete when caught by the passer. (See 10 above)

12. Field goal counts 4 points; try-for point: 2 points if successful through place or drop-kick; one point if successful bypass or run. The defense may not score on a try.

13. When one team is 45 or more points ahead at the end of the first half or if a team secures a 45-point lead during the second half, the game is ended immediately.

14. The team whose goal line is involved shall put the ball in play by a snap on their 20-yard line after a touchback and by a kick-off or punt on their 20-yard line after a safety. After a safety, the ball must go at least 15 yards or be touched by the receiving team before members of the kicking team are eligible to touch it. Receiving team must have at least 3 players between the 35- and 40-yard lines of the kicking team.

15. The 20-yard line will be used as a penetration line.

16. If the player receiving the snap advances beyond the line of scrimmage without an exchange, the penalty shall be 5 yards plus loss of down (illegal procedure)

COACHES - All coaches and volunteers closely related to the teams must read and sign a TCAF Code of Ethics Form which should be kept on file by the member school.

OFFICIALS –

1. Officials must be certified.

2. All Varsity District and Playoff Games will utilize five (5) officials

3. Each home Team will use their home officials or Chapter.

4. Visiting Team must be notified of the Chapter and individual officials being used. The visiting team has the right to scratch any undesired individual official.

5. Playoffs – Both Head Football coaches must agree on the officials for their respective games. Each Head Coach should be notified, and officials agreed upon prior to the football season.

UNIFORMS – All teams must have both Home and Away uniforms. Uniforms must meet all NCAA specs. Home teams will wear white and Away teams will wear a dark color.

VIDEO USE AND EXCHANGE

Teams may video only their own team. A minimum of two game videos will be exchanged. The coaches have any choice of their opponent’s games during the season. The video exchange may be hudl, google drive, DVD, or any other method that the two coaches involved may agree upon. Videos must be exchanged by Saturday morning prior to their next game.

IN SEASON CONTEST

1. TCAF SixMan football season shall

a. Consist of 10 Varsity contest which may be played over 11 weeks

b. There must be five (5) days between varsity contests.

c. The five-day restriction applies to:

• Scrimmages

• Games

2. Students are limited to no more than 6 quarters during a 5-day period.

a. This includes Varsity and Sub Varsity contests.

b. A Quarter counts toward a player’s limit if he plays a single play (scrimmage or non-scrimmage) at any point in a quarter.

3. The intent of the 6-quarter rule is to allow players who may often not get to participate in games due to the 45-point mercy rule ending a game at half time. It is not intended to allow a varsity starter to play 6 quarters in a week. The intent is to allow those who do not get to play on “Friday night” to get game play during the week.

4. Each coach should log who plays and how many quarters they have played during week and if asked to provide the log, it should be available immediately.

CALLED GAME GUIDELINES

1. Safety: is of prime importance. Always make determinations based upon the safety of all individuals involved.

2. Lightning or Bad Weather: Every effort should be made replay/continue a game called due to lightning or bad weather, at the next available date, at the same site as the original game. Delay as many times as possible before calling or delaying. Game should be picked up at the exact same time with the exact same conditions and statistics.

3. Visiting team traveling more than 100 miles: In the event of the visiting team having to travel more than 100 miles, the game will be decided by declaration. In any case where points 2, 3, and 4 are used, if the game is a tie, there will be a score declaration of 1-0. The point system in declaring seeding will remain the same with this score being part of a tie for seeding or championships.

Criteria will be in this order:

• Actual Score

• Penetrations

• First Downs

• Total Yards

TIE BREAKERS FOR DISTRICT STANDINGS:

Two-way tie: Head to head

Three-way tie:

1. Head to head

2. Point differential with a 25 point cap. The team with the highest point advantage will become the District Champ and take the higher seed. Then the process will repeat for the remaining two teams to determine the District Runner-Up.

3. In the case of a continued tie of the remaining two teams, (after point differential), a coin toss will determine the District Champion. Then the process will repeat for the remaining two teams to determine the District Runner-Up.

ALL DISTRICT / ALL STATE SELECTION

1. The head football coaches will meet the Wednesday after district certification to select the official All-District Football Team. The meeting site and time will be established by the Football Commissioner and the TCAF Administration.

2. The announcement of All-District selections will be withheld until all district representatives have been eliminated from the playoffs.

3. Coaches will select an Offensive Players of the Year and a Defensive Player of the year.

4. Coaches will select a Coach of the Year.

5. Coaches will select a first and second team for both offense and defense.

6. Offensive Positions to be selected for First and Second Team will be as follows:

• 2 tight Ends

• 3 receivers

• 1 Center

• 1 Quarterback

• 2 Running Backs

• 1 Spread Back

• 1 Utility Back

• 1 Kicker

• 1 Specialty Team Player

• 1 Offensive Lineman

7. Defensive positions to be selected for First and Second Team will be as follows:

• 3 Linesman

• 3 Linebackers

• 4 Defensive Backs

• 1 Punter

GENERAL RULES:

1. The use of tobacco or any controlled substance (alcohol, drugs, etc.) before, during or after games at contest sites is prohibited by TCAF.

2. Live animal mascots, cannons, firearms, fireworks, etc. are prohibited at TCAF sponsored contests.

3. No dogs or other animals are allowed at TCAF sponsored contests.

4. Except in their normal course of business, emergency vehicles shall not flashlights or sound sirens during the course of a game.

5. Noisemakers are prohibited at TCAF events held at field houses and/ or gymnasiums.

6. In events held in field houses/gyms, megaphones may be used only by cheerleaders, in uniform. Megaphones must not be used to strike walls or playing surfaces.

7. Bands, when permitted, shall play only during time-outs and intermissions. Individual instruments may not be used as noisemakers.

8. Air horns and bullhorns, handheld or otherwise, are not permitted at any TCAF contest.

PLAY OFF GAMES

1. Team Colors: Home team wears colored jerseys and visiting team wears white unless another arrangement is mutually agreed upon.

2. All school passes and season tickets are suspended.

3. Film Exchange. Teams in the play-offs are required to exchange at least 3 quality films/tapes no later than 10:00 a.m. on Monday before the game that week. Opponents may request game films they wish to receive.

4. Game Referees for Playoffs. By mutual agreement; participating schools will work with a local, recognized officials’ chapter. At least four officials shall be used in all playoff games. TCAF office will assign officials for final game.

5. Home Team Responsibilities. (Except State Championship Games)

a. Collect all gate money;

b. Provide necessary personnel: announcer, clock operator, security, medical personnel, etc.;

c. Responsible for printing game programs;

d. Secure three chain crew officials and official statistician, to be paid from gate receipts.

e. Gate receipt distribution

f. From gate receipts, pay all expenses.

g. After expenses-divide the remaining receipts between the schools as agreed upon BEFORE THE GAME begins.

h. REPORT RESULTS. The coach of the winning team of each play-off game shall report the results of the game as soon as possible after the conclusion of the contest.

6. Prior to the championship game

Team rosters and pictures of play-off qualifiers must be in the TCAF OFFICE by the deadline to be assured of being included in the state championship programs. Rosters must include players name, jersey number and grade, Head and Assistant Coach’s name.

TCAF SPRING FOOTBALL PRACTICE

(Effective 4/1/18)

~ SPRING FOOTBALL ACTIVITIES ~

Spring Training. There shall be no school football practice or training for a contestant or team, and no football equipment Issued after the close of the regular season schedule, except as incidental to the football championship playoffs.

A school can have 20 consecutive calendar days to complete 10 days of contact activities with additional 5 days to be used to conduct non-contact activities and conducted in shorts and tee shirts. (No contact equipment is to be used on those 5 days). Contact equipment may be issued on the first day of the 15 calendar days. No activities of any type should take place on Sundays

School administrators shall inform the TCAF DIRECTOR in writing by May 30 of the year in which the practices took place as to

1. Dates from beginning to end of practice

2. Dates on which actual contact practices took place.

These spring practices are not mandatory, and each school has the option to determine exactly what they do regarding drills, inters quad scrimmages, spring games, and the like. There shall be no games or practices conducted with any other school or schools.

The TCAF Director will keep these records on file in the event someone questions a school’s dates and / or activities.
