Concordia 78 at Augsburg 52- Game Recap

MINNEAPOLIS-- Concordia scored 13 of the game's first 14 points and cruised to a 78-52 victory over host Augsburg. The Cobbers built a 23-point halftime lead and then used their entire bench to seal the victory.

The win is the second lopsided Concordia victory in as many games. The Cobbers are now 4-3 in league play and 6-4 overall. Augsburg remains winless on the season as they freefall to 0-8 in the MIAC and 0-11 overall.

For the second straight game Jamie Visness (Sr., Hallock, Minn.) led Concordia in scoring. The senior guard followed up her 20-point performance against St. Kate's on Saturday by scoring a game-high 16 points against the Auggies. She accounted for 12 of her 16 points from shots behind the 3-point arc. She went 4-of-6 from long range and 6-of-10 from the field. Tori Ehlert (Jr., Battle Lake, Minn.) had one of her most complete games in a Cobber uniform. She scored a career-high 13 points and hauled down a team-high seven rebounds. In addition, she canned her only 3-point attempt of the game, which was only her second 3-point basket of the year.

Katie LaGrave had the hot hand for the Auggies. LaGrave finished with a team-high 15 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. It was her second career double-double.

For the first time all season, Concordia senior guard Mandy Pearson (Watkins, Minn.) was held under 10 points. Last year's conference MVP scored six points and dished out eight assists. Pearson's backcourt running mate, Annie Keeley (So., Grafton, N.D.), scored nine points and made 2-of-3, 3-point shots.

For the second straight game, head coach Jessica Rahman was able to get every player suited on the bench into the game. As with the game against the Wildcats, 11 different Cobber players scored at least one point. Cobber freshman guard Jessica Heintz (Bismarck, N.D.) came off the bench to score nine points in 13 minutes of action.

Moorhead, MN

GAME TIME: 1:00 pm

SERIES: Concordia leads 39-9

SERIES STARTED: 1980

LAST YEAR: Last year the Cobbers swept the series, winning 75-51 at Bethel and then claiming the second game 70-54 in Moorhead. In the first game, the Visness sisters combined to score 31 points. Jamie scored 16 to outdo her younger sister Karie by a single point. Karie was perfect from the floor (6-of-6) and 3-point range (2-of-2). In the game played at Memorial Auditorium, the Cobbers used their strength inside to down the Royals by 16. Concordia outscored Bethel 52-18 from “inside the paint”. The win helped the Cobbers clinch an MIAC playoff spot. Mandy Pearson led Concordia with 16 points and 12 assists.

SERIES HISTORY: Concordia has won the last 14 meetings between the two teams. The last time the Royals came away with a victory was on February 22, 1997. That was the culmination of a four-game winning streak in the series for Bethel…the average margin of victory in the past 14 games for Concordia IS 17.9 points. Of those 14 wins, the Cobbers have won 11 by double figures – including four straight…the wildest game of series occurred in the 2001-02 season. After beating the Royals by 47 in the first game that year, Concordia had to hold off the Royals to claim a 99-90 victory. Mandy Berggren had a career-high 35 points in the final game of her career.

THE INSIDE SCOOP

CONCORDIA (4-3 MIAC/6-4)

DEPTH WITH A CAPITAL “D”

In the past two games, Concordia has played every member of the team and has had 11 players score at least one point in each game. This new-found depth comes from two reasons. First, the Cobbers have done a good job jumping out to early leads and letting head coach Jessica Rahman have the luxury of getting younger players some valuable conference playing time. The second factor is that several of the younger players on the team have started to greatly improve and are making a strong contention to push other regulars for playing time.

WHO’S THAT GIRL?

Case in point for our above argument is the emergence of unknown guard Jessica Heintz. Last Saturday she was not even listed in the program. (Note to all fans and coaches; As smart as you might think the Gameday staff is or is not, we still do not have the last name of Kreskin so we can’t read the minds of the people who are responsible for personnel changes!) She has now played in two games and scored a total of 13 points. She has given the Cobbers a solid substitute when senior Mandy Pearson leaves the floor to take a breather. Her biggest asset is that she can handle the offense without turning the ball over. In her first two games since joining the varsity, she has committed a grand total of 0.

TORRID EHLERT

Cobber junior post player Tori Ehlert is coming off one of her most complete games as a Cobber. She finished the game with 13 points and seven rebounds. Her point total is career high. She also sank her only 3-point attempt in the game. Currently she is shooting better from 3-point range (28.6%) than from the free throw line (18.2%). Ehlert is currently leading the Cobbers in rebounding and tied for 10th in the MIAC.

THE CALL TO THE POST

The next two weeks will go a long way in determining where the Cobbers will finish. In the course of the next 14 days, Concordia will play seven games – six will be in the friendly confines of Memorial Auditorium.

THE INSIDE SCOOP

BETHEL (4-3 MIAC/6-5)

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK

Don’t look now but the upper half of the standings in the MIAC in women’s basketball has a new member. Bethel has stormed into the top half of the league in 2004-05 by winning their first two league games and four of their first seven. They are currently tied with the Cobbers for fifth place in the league. The last time that Bethel was over .500 this late in January was during the 1996-97 season.

DING DONG THE WICKED WITCH IS DEAD

On Wednesday, Bethel snapped a 20-game losing streak to St. Thomas. The last time the Royals had beaten the Tommies was back in January of 1995. Three different Bethel players had at least 10 points in the game. Jen Ahleberg, Heather Davis and Bridget Weber combined for 43 of the team’s 73 points. Ahlberg led the way with 20 points in a game, which Bethel jumped out to a 20-8 lead and never trailed.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK PROPS

Bethel guard Jen Ahlberg was named the MIAC Player of the Week on December 6. She won the award for her efforts against Macalester and St. Catherine. Ahlberg averaged 21 points and 8.5 rebounds as Bethel won the two games over the Scots and Katies. In a 85-44 win over Macalester, Ahlberg finished with 15 points (7-12 FG, 1-2 3pt FG) and 9 rebounds. In a 90-88 come-from-behind win over St. Catherine, Ahlberg scored 5 of Bethel's last 7 points as they came back from 15 points down with 8:41 left to win.

MARQUEE MATCH-UP

Today’s game pits the #1 offensive team in the MIAC in conference play (Bethel) against the #2 offensive team (Concordia). The Royals enter the game averaging 74.3 ppg in their first seven league games, while the Cobbers are scoring at a 73.1 ppg clip. Look for two spots on the floor to determine the victor. Inside, Bethel’s only post player Heather Davis is the team’s second leading scorer. She will be going against Cobber freshman Melanie Hageman, who also happens to be second on the Cobbers in scoring. The other key match-up will be between Bethel’s leading scorer Jen Ahlberg and the Cobbers’ Annie Keeley.

Jessica Rahman is entering her

second season as head women's

basketball coach in 2004-05. In

her first season in 2003-04, she

guided Concordia to a 21-7 mark

and brought the Cobbers all the

way to the championship game of the MIAC tournament.

Rahman, formerly Jessica Beachy, was a four-time All-American standout at Concordia and helped the Cobbers win the national championship in the 1987-88 season. She is the school's all-time leading scorer and was inducted into the Concordia Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998.

After graduating magna cum laude from Concordia in 1988, Rahman earned an M.A. degree in education from North Dakota State University in 1998.

In her four years at Concordia, she helped the Cobbers win 96 of the 118 games in which she played. In 1997-88 the Lady Cobbers went 29-2, captured their third-consecutive MIAC title, and won the NCAA Championship in Concordia's Memorial Auditorium. She was again named All-MIAC and a first team All-American. She was also honored with the NCAA Division III Player of the Year in 1988. To go along with her Player of the Year award, she was given the Honda Award as the NCAA Division III Female Athlete of the Year and earned one of the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships.

Concordia Women’s Basketball Preview

You’ll have to excuse Concordia head coach Jessica Rahman and the rest of the coaching staff if they feel like a college student in the mid 1990’s getting ready to watch the final episode of Beverly Hills 90210. Rahman is about to have the best seat in the house for the final episode of Mandy Pearson 56562.

Mandy Pearson (Sr., Watkins, Minn.), last year’s MIAC MVP, is back for her senior season in 2004-05 and has already garnered preseason All-American honors by . Last year Pearson finished the season by being ranked in the top 35 in the nation in three different statistical categories. She was eighth in assists per game (6.3), 29th in steals per game (3.5) and 32nd in free throw percentage (82.3%). She led the MIAC in assists (6.50 apg), was second in steals (3.73 spg) and 12th in overall scoring (13.7 ppg). She was also third in free throw percentage and fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.21). She has been gaining confidence and gathering accolades since she burst onto the scene as a freshman and was named to the MIAC All-First Year Team and led the nation in assists. The 2004-05 campaign should looks to be a coronation for one of the best players ever to suit up in a Cobber uniform.

Pearson will not be the only star in this year’s season-long episode. Last year Concordia had their best record since the 1990-91 season. The team finished with a 21-7 mark and made it all the way to the MIAC playoff championship game, a first in school history. Concordia also set a school record for biggest improvement in one season. The Cobbers improved a full seven games from the 2002-03 season.

Joining Pearson in the backcourt will be 2003-04 All-First Year Team member Annie Keeley (So., Grafton, N.D.). Keeley was second on the team in scoring last year with a 10.9 points per game average. She also finished the year as the team’s third leading rebounder (4.0 rpg), was ranked 14th in the league in 3-point baskets made and 15th in offensive rebounds (46). Keely also factored among the top players in the league in scoring, 3-point field goal percentage and assists. Her year of experience will help make the Cobber offense multi-dimensional and will help take some of the scoring load off Pearson and shooting guard Jamie Visness (Sr., Hallock, Minn.).

If the inside players can band together and help out the starring members of the Cobber perimeter, then Rahman could be looking at another award-winning season of Cobber women’s basketball.
