Once a year, we provide you with updates on our school’s achievements through the North Carolina School Report Card. This Report Card includes important information about school and student performance, class sizes, attendance, school safety, instructional resources, and teacher quality. There also is information about how our school measured against federal participation targets and the number of suspensions and expulsions in our school. For the third year, each school has received a letter grade to describe its performance. These school performance grades are comprised of student achievement (80 percent) and growth (20 percent). Report data is available for our school district and for the state’s education system as a whole. Our school’s full Report Card can be found on the NC School Report Cards’ website at src. Our school district’s report also is available on the Report Card website. School Report Cards are provided for regular public schools, charter schools, and alternative schools that were open during the 2015-16 school year.As a part of the 2015-16 budget bill, the N.C. General Assembly made some changes to the definition of “low-performing school” and has given some specific guidance and direction to these schools. I am writing to let you know that Wiley Magnet Middle School has been designated as a low-performing school by the N.C. State Board of Education. As defined in G.S. 115C-105.37: “The State Board of Education shall design and implement a procedure to identify low-performing schools on an annual basis. Low-performing schools are those that receive a school performance grade of D or F and a school growth score of ‘met expected growth’ or ‘not met expected growth’ as defined by G.S. 115C-83.15.”Wiley received a school performance grade of D and did not make expected growth and, as a low-performing school, is required to develop an improvement plan that specifically addresses how the school will improve both the school performance grade and school growth score. The plan will also include how the superintendent and other central office administrators in the district will work with us and monitor the progress of our school. In addition, Wiley has been identified as a Focus School by DPI. Focus Schools are identified as a result of the achievement level of “in-school gaps between the highest achieving and lowest achieving subgroups” in terms of proficiency (reading/math) over a number of years or, schools with subgroup proficiency scores less than 50 percent over a number of years.Focus Schools must select interventions providing the following considerations:Aligned to the school needs assessmentSupported through school processes (e.g., increased learning time)Effective instructional methods or practices appropriate for identified subgroupsHigh quality job-embedded professional developmentUse of dataSchool safety and disciplineFamily and community engagementThe numbers only tell part of the story. At Wiley Magnet Middle School, we are proud of the following special activities that are underway to provide an enriching and meaningful education for our students. High quality instruction for all students is the goal and our teachers are committed to their professional growth by participating in training in areas such as SIOP (language and vocabulary supports), technology integration, Inquiry Based Learning, balanced literacy, STEAM, math foundations and others. We are adding club offerings such as STEAM club, GEMS (Girls Excelling in Math and Science), Art and Gaming to engage students in learning outside of the classroom and to support our magnet theme. We have also created a mentor program, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, for selected 7th and 8th grade boys. Business and community partners play a significant role in our progress by providing guest artists, volunteers, access to events, and material resources. The Wiley PTA is active in our school and continues to seek ways to improve the overall school experience for all students. There is a focus on our core values (student-centered, accountability, high expectations, collaboration, equity and integrity) in everything we do. State and local education leaders are committed to providing parents with more information about schools. Well-informed parents who participate in their children’s education and school enhance the learning environment for students and educators alike. In addition, the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) requires schools to issue Report Cards. At Wiley your involvement is very important to our success! I encourage you to review our Report Card carefully, then feel free to contact me directly to discuss any questions or concerns you may have. I also welcome your feedback regarding other interests you have in our school.Thank you for allowing me to share this Report Card with you and thank you for supporting our efforts to provide your child with a high-quality education.Sincerely,Lisa S. Bodenheimer, Principal ................
