• Think of the main things you will need to help you survive out there.

• Remember: It is very remote – no shops or supermarkets nearby. You will only be able to go to the mainland every few weeks, to stock up on food and drink.

• The weather is very windy and cold.

This means that you will have to have things that will last you, while you are living on the island.

TASK ONE:

Think of as many useful things that you will have to have with you on Flannan Isle.

Create a mind-map where you create a bubble for one of your objects and another explaining why they are so useful:

TASK TWO: Now after looking at your mind-map, decide what are the three most useful things that you know you cannot live without, on the island.

TASK THREE: Now write a letter to a friend asking for them to send you these things by post. It will be quite expensive for them to do this so remember that you have to persuade them into sending you the items, and that they know it is urgent and that they should send you the things as soon as possible.

• FIRST PARAGRAPH: You have forgotten to take some things with you when you left Aberdeen to move to Flannan Isle

• Ask them if they could send you the following five items.

• WRITE A PARAGRAPH ABOUT EACH ITEM THAT YOU NEED:

• SECOND PARAGRAPH: Write what the first item is, e.g: I really would like it if you would send me my favourite mug.’

• Explain why you want it: ‘This is because there are no mugs or anything to drink out of , in the lighthouse…’

• FOURTH PARAGRAPH: Write the next item that you need, and why.

• CONCLUSION: Finish off your letter by saying that you hope they will be able to send you the things you need, soon.
