HISTORICAL NOTE
The General Land Office was established as a bureau of the United States Treasury Department in 1812. In 1836, Surveyors-General were placed under the supervisiion of this bureau. The General Land Office was transferred to the newly established Department of the Interior in 1849. Its function was to supervise the survey, management, and disposition of the public domain and generally, to execute all laws relating to public land.
By the President's Reorganization Plan No. III of 1946, the General Land Office was consolidated with the Grazing Service of the Department of the Interior to form the Bureau of Land Management of the same department.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This record group consists of two boxes and 545 volumes of material mostly on microfilm and arranged in seven series: 1) Correspondence, 1900-1931; 2) Applications, transfers, and contests; 3) Land Entry Books, 1854-1934; 4) Land Office Registers; 5) Township plats used in the disposition of public lands; 6) Township platsnot used; and 7) Miscellany.
The bulk of this collection consists of the original land entry books maintained by the various U.S. Land Offices in Nebraska. These volumes record individual claims to the public lands in Nebraska under the provisions of the various government land laws including the Preemption Act, the Homestead Act, the Timber Culture Act, and the Kincaid Act. The entries are for the original claimant to any given tract of land and contain information relative to the date of filing, legal description, number of acres, date of final patent and other relevant data. Record of subsequent sales and transfers are not included. This information may be secured from the office of the Register of Deeds for the related county. No information is provided regarding purchasers for tracts within the various railroad land grants. Land originally chosen by the individual railroads was
sold by those railroads to individuals and such records would exist with those roads. The Historical Society holds records for the

The correspondence of Series One consists of letters of the General Land Office
to the Register of the U.S. Land Office at Alliance, Nebraska, arranged chronologically
in 88 volumes.
The township plats in Series Five and Six are arranged by range.
Also included in the collection are original applications and transfers of claims through
sale or disqualification.
In order to effectively utilize the land entry books, it is necessary to know an
approximate location within a particular county before a given tract can be located. The
"1885 Atlas of the State of Nebraska" is useful for this purpose and provides rangeand
township numbers. Staff members are available to assist the researcher in the location
and use of these volumes.
For a detailed resume of the provisions and operations of the public land policies
in Nebraska, the researcher is advised to consult Sheldon's Land Systems and Land
Policies in Nebraska, copies of which are in the library.
All the records of this collection exist on microfilm except Series Six, Township
Plats - not used. These plats doe not comprise a complete set and include resurveys.
In addition to loose plats, ranges 1-19 East and 1-20 West have sets of plats in bound
volumes. SAC-FOX allotments and plats may be found in Series Five at the beginning
of Ranges 16 & 17 East.
Originals exist at the Archives for Series Three and Five thru Series Seven of
this collection. All of Series One, Two and Four have been returned to the Federal
Archives in Kansas City. Most of the records were transferred to the State Archives by
the Federal Government, October 18, 1937 under Nebr. LB286 approved April 30,
1937.
