Integer Rules: Working with Positive and Negative Numbers

Integer Rules: Working with Positive and Negative Numbers

For Multiplication and Division

When the signs are the same, the answer is ‘Positive’

Ex: (+) (+) = (+) (4) (3) = 12

(-) (-) = (+) (-4) (-3) = 12

Ex: [pic] [pic] [pic] [pic]

When the signs are different, the answer is ‘Negative’

Ex: (+) (-) = (-) (4) (-3) = -12

(-) (+) = (-) (-4) (3) = -12

Ex: [pic] [pic] [pic] [pic]

For Addition:

When the signs are the same, keep them the same.

Ex: (+) + (+) = (+) (-) + (-) = (-)

4 + 7 = 11 -4 + (-7) = -11

When the signs are different, find the difference and use the sign of the number that is farthest

from zero.

Ex: 4 + (-7) = -3 -4 + 7 = 3

For Subtraction:

Remember to ‘keep-change-change’, then follow the addition rules.

Ex: 4 – (-7) = 4 + 7 = 11 -4 –(-7) = -4 + 7 = 3
